gee...I wonder...
Hey, AG, I'm not too sure if you need this info but what always stood out to me when seeing this song being performed was that Marius was actually joined by his 'dead' friends on stage.
He'd start the song by himself but was eventually joined by the ghosts who would stand around and watch him. The few Marius' I saw would continue singing the song to them and towards the end they would leave him all by himself again. Great song.
QM
Thanks QM! I'm adding this all in. I have to cut it down though, I'm only supposed to have a paragraph about the show and the rest be about the 1848 Revolution. Right now it's about 2 paragraphs of Les Mis...
Would just like to correct you on something which is a pet hate of mine.
The uprising in Les Mis is NOT one of the Revolutions. Neither THE Revolution (which is frequently mistaken for, despite the fact that B&S wrote Le Revolution Francaise about that particular event), nor the Revolution of 1848. It depicts one of the smaller insurrections which it is suspected Hugo himself took part in, and which occurred in 1832.
Sorry, it just annoys me when people start referring to the uprising as a Revolution. Revolutions generally suggest that things change. In this situation, all that happens is that the students change from living to dead.
Thanks InTheMoney, but I've run the idea by my teacher. I'm using the song because the musical is set in the time period, and relates to the tension between citizens and the French government evident during the Revolution of 1848. The fact that the revolts are seperate is noted. Thanks though!
