Thanks InTheMoney, but I've run the idea by my teacher. I'm using the song because the musical is set in the time period, and relates to the tension between citizens and the French government evident during the Revolution of 1848.
Actually, although the second half of LES MIZ is indeed about the 1832 uprising, Aspiringguy's ideas are in keeping with Victor Hugo's because when Hugo wrote LES MISERABLES, he incorporated much of what he saw in the 1848 Revolution. The 1832 insurrection was small (by French standards
), and Hugo wanted something much larger and more exciting in scope, something like what he saw in the streets of Paris in 1848. So although the latter half of LES MISERABLES is set in 1832, much of the imagery is inspired by the 1848 Revolution. Some say he really wanted to write about the 1848 revolution, but the timeline he committed to for Valjean wouldn't work out that way.
"Empty Chairs at Empty Tables" is one of my all-time favourite songs; it's gorgeously haunting and one of the most memorable (and emotional) moments in LES MIZ. Many people did indeed associate the song with the AIDS epidemic; Armistead Maupin mentions it in one of his novels, and it's also described in the liner notes of the 10th Anniversary CD. The song is also a pleasure to sing -- such a heartbreaking soliloquy for the character -- and was my signature song in high school.
Enjoy it!
(In the spirit of making Michael Arden our favourite avatar, I've changed mine to his gorgeous mug.

Bwaytheatre-I love your signature. That was a great article and Johnny is a great role model.
5 of the 7 posts on this page now have a Michael picture. This might be my favorite page! :-P
He's takin' over the world, folks.
Sorry to take so long to get back to this topic. I went away for a few days and all these new posts! I'm in utter shock. I kept seeing that adorable face smiling at me from those avatars and was quite taken aback by the fact that two different posters--and even more I now discover--could look so much alike. It never occured to me that they were actually photos of the dreamy actor-singer-songwriter Michael Arden, star of Bare, a collection of whose pictures I have a special folder for on my computer. I should have known better. It would be quite unlikely that more than one person on this planet would have the same perfect smile as Michael. (And it IS a perfect smile, which never fails to cheer me when I see it.) Well, thanks for setting me straight on my error. Well, as straight as I can possibly be set... :)
PS: No one else has the same face as my avatar except me!!!

If we're still threadjacking, I'd like to add to the procrastination... You Might Be Addicted to BWW IF you skip lunch so you can post. Am I a loser or what?
AG, did you happen to record yourself singing? Lots of people here do that and send clips... interested to hear if you did. I love that song. We should have a bww karaoke competition.

Also, if it matters, if no one said it already cause i don't have time to read through 3 pages, and if you haven't done it already, Marius got injured at the Barricade (leg) and most people have him limping around while he sings. Also, his dead friends at the Barricade come back as ghosts in the song. Our group had the ghosts come from behind him and Marius never looks back to see them.
