Because the music is a lot better than the other crap in Jukebox musicals...

Yes, But also I mean Beach Boys maybe icons but Elvis is like the king of rock and roll, without Elvis, MTV wouldnt exist and all kinds of things would be really diffent plus Elvis's music has more of a universial appeal that Beach Boys doesnt.

Elvis has Billy Joel, ABBA, Queen, and Beach Boys beat out...easy
With Queen at a close second...

From what I can tell, the reason more people are liking ASU is because of the book not the music. If I had to rank the jukebox shows based on the music alone (and I have seen none of them) it would probably be Movin' Out, Good Vibrations, Mamma Mia!, and then All Shook Up, but that is because I am not a big Elvis fan. People go into the jukebox shows knowing they are going to enjoy the music. ASU seems to be the first one not to attach the great music to a flimsy book (well to give Movin' Out some credit, it wasn't really trying to have a good plot as all its artistic focus was Twyla Tharp's choreography).
I was there too, with the whole family and it was fantastic. I didn't think it would be that funny but it was hysterical. Cheyenne was incredible and Jennifer had such a sweet sounding voice. The way the songs were placed in the show were smooth and not pushed which i liked a lot. The ensemble was so full of energy and the audience was really hyped as well. I can't wait to go back and see it again. Finally the whole cast is extremely sweet and so nice to talk too, they came out and greeted us in the snow and it was such an awesome night! Yea Cheyenne!
native... it was a good night for our boy huh? lol
I'm going to see it next week, anybody knows
where is the stage door at the palace?
Thanx!

One of the reasons ASU works is because they don't take themselves too seriously. They've got a good book (okay, so I've always liked that Shakespeare fellow
), and the jokes landed. The music was well integrated, and all the performances were solid (at least).
And there was a blonde girl, too, but she was integral to the story.
Cheyenne has the presence to carry the part.
I don't know if it's brilliant, but it's fun in the way a jukebox musical ought to be, but I guess usually isn't. (I haven't seen that many of them.)
I saw it from the balcony, and the price is definitely worth it, even though I'm not really fond of being so high, or looking down on the stage.
So for those of you who are uncertain of going, check out the balcony. It's worth it if only to see if you agree.
tiny-toon the stage door is on the side of the theater. If you walk out the front of the theater you make a right around the corner and walk down the block and the door is right there. hope that helps the exact address escapes me right now but someone else might know it.
I'm really happy that this show is shaping up to be a hit! I've had the feeling that it had that potential since I first read about it, and I'm especially glad because it's one of the 6 shows I have tickets to see in June (and the best seat of the bunch, front row center aisle, so I'll be able to see Cheyenne very close up!) I've said it here before, but Cheyenne's likely stardom from this show will be hugely significant for gay people. Cheyenne Jackson is going to be the first openly gay hot/sexy Broadway musical "leading man" (there have been other gay leads, but no one the entire female and gay male audience will go wild for the way they're doing for Cheyenne!) You are my hero!
I'd have to agree about All Shook Up working because of its book. I'm not an Elvis fan by any means and I definitely won't be running out to buy a cast album for the music, but I'd see All Shook Up again because it was enjoyable and overall, a solid show. If the book didn't work, the show could've ended up being just as bad as Good Vibrations. Have I mentioned before how truly awful THAT show was?
Oh yeah, I have.
no problem happy to help!
I wonder if they made any changes since the Chicago production. I found the book to be way too convoluted (and the song titles as dialogues were just too cheesy to get a laugh from me). The whole thing about the travelling art museum (and dancing statues) just didn't fly with me and the Shakespearean cross-dressing antics just didn't seem justified enough for me to buy it. Was Cheyenne's character supposed to be "magical"? Why was the inlfuence of the new boy in town more significant than the new female? It was never clear to me. And I didn't see much in the way of choreography, especially in the finale and curtain call, which ended on a thud when I saw it. But to each his own, I guess. I'm glad people are enjoying it, though. I haven't seen Good Vibrations, but I would rank All Shook Up after Mamma Mia and Movin' Out, both of which moved and inspired me in ways that All Shook Up never did. I didn't HATE All Shook Up, mind you. I saw a lot of potential in the show and I went in ready to have a great time. I was just confused and disappointed in the end. Are the motorcycle angels still in the show?
*SPOILERS*
PS - Did anyone else notice the HUGE similarites in the endings of both All Shook Up and Mamma Mia? The stories in both resolve themselves in almost exactly the same way.
Matt, the song titles as dialogue was actually the one thing I would take out of the show. It was cute the first time but not the tenth.
I don't think his character was supposed to be "magical" at all. I think he was just so "cool" he could do all of that. The story wasn't realistic anyways (not that that's a bad thing) so none of that bothered me to begin with.
And they must have added choreography since you saw it because it really was a highlight of the show for me. Those guys and gals can really move!
(And yes, the flying angels are still there)
this is getting me excited.. i might just have to get my TDF tix :)
i'm so excited to see it now. I need to get tickets!
"From what I can tell, the reason more people are liking ASU is because of the book not the music"
From what I gather from reading what others are saying, its good because the songs work WITHIN the book.
Also, Tiny, the stage door is on the side of the theatre on 47th. There are doors inside the theatre (on the side of the orchestra) that open up to the street. If you go out there, you'll be right next to it.
That' very true, TGIF.
With GOOD VIBRATIONS, songs were put in there just to have them there. They served no purpose and were just confusing.
With this show, they actually push the story along.
Matt! That avatar, perfect.
Look what I can do!
