Posted: 2/25/05 at 4:15pmI went to the Box Office today. They told me that often they sell out and do not have student rush... but sometimes they do, an hour before curtain. The woman said just keep checking back. Which I intend to.

I saw this earlier this week and LOVED it. Even though I miss Cheyenne, Scott Porter was excellent. He's not as strong vocally but is much more boy band-y and is a fantastic dancer.
The show seems to be even funnier now than when I saw it at the NYMF in the summer. It's a great time!

Posted: 2/25/05 at 7:30pmI'm a little late in seeing this show, we lost the lottery for DRS last night so we headed to TKTS and got tickets to Altar Boyz. I'm in love! I haven't laughed that hard at the theater in a while. Tyler is the star of the show, love his voice, his dancing, his eye gestures. BUT Luke is my favorite. Pre-ordered a CD and bought a poster. I would like to see it move to Broadway, but it needs to be a small theater. Go see it! I'm going back lots and lots!

Posted: 2/26/05 at 6:07pmi watched the video on broadway.com. They seemed so funny. Where they actually serious though, or were they just mocking the whole time? At first they seemed like they were joking around but then i started to acutally believe them. So which is it?

Posted: 2/26/05 at 6:15pmThat video is too funny. They were mocking, but are so good they are believable. I love it!! Can't wait for the CD, which you can pre-order at the theater. They'll send it out in April they said.

Posted: 2/26/05 at 6:36pmIs Cheyennee's page the only place with music from this show? C'mon, really?
#35re: ALTAR BOYZ
Posted: 2/26/05 at 8:38pmi think so, courtney. there's no music on the official site or any other website i've been to relating to the show. but if you're ever able to discover any more songs online, please let me know! for now though, i guess we'll have to wait for the cd.

actually, no, former cast member Darren Ritchie also has a clip of "Jesus Called Me on my Cell Phone" from the same earlier version of the show on his website.

Just a random thought...
Does anyone else think that since Altar Boyz got such fabulous reviews/ is doing so well at the box office/ is going to bring a huge young audience to Dodgers.... its success will possibly increase chances to bring back Bare?
Yes, I still hold hope for Bare. Don't yell at me, pweeze.

InfiniteTheaterFrenzy ....
I think it might be time to let Bare die.

The concept seems a bit weak...seems like an Off- Broadway Musical is tooo much for this...
I anticipate Margo's review...

Posted: 3/5/05 at 10:59am"The concept seems a bit weak", I haven't seen it so I can't agree or disagree but it seems to me that without fail, every reviewer out there didn't seem to care whether or not that was the case. They all but gushed over it...but yes, let's do wait for Margo's review.

"I enjoy the Abraham... even though every actor is hysterical. "
Of course you enjoy Abrham...because David Josefberg is FANTAAAAAAAAAASTIC!

I saw the show last night - and each and every one of the guys is "FANTAAAAAAAAAASTIC!" LOL. I was especially impressed Tyler...what a voice! But honestly - all of the guys are great

Posted: 3/5/05 at 12:14pmThey were believable in the video clip, so much so that it was eerie for me. I felt like I was back in my Bible school days sitting with teens who were going to save the world. I'm looking forward to seeing it - a parody of a parody.

Posted: 3/5/05 at 1:40pmI was not the least bit confused about the video in the first place and thought it was side splittingly funny, but then again, I understood Spinal Tap as well. Think of the Broadway.com video as Spinal Tap for the tweens.

Al, and the video is even funnier after you've seen the show!
It actually made me want to see the ALTAR BOYZ as a "Spinal Tap"-like film.
The video is exceptionally smart for Broadway.com. It's full of clever, funny throw-away bits. I love Juan's "Menudo" comments, Luke's "thug-ology" and Abraham's "Is this kosher?" and his Hi-fiving Jackie Mason.
And the reading material.

Posted: 3/5/05 at 2:44pmI agree Master, it was an extremely clever video. What made it great and obviously confusing to many on this board, is how deadpan the Boyz' delivery is. Which, one would hope that people now understand, is the point. I'm once again out west where they think 10 commandements is theater but I'm hoping the show runs long enough for me to finally see it for myself.

There's a great opening night video up on Broadway.com also.
Of note, I stopped by today to see if they would be selling rush tickets. I asked if they had any of the cheap seats and was told "I have seats, but no cheap ones!". This was at about 1:10. So that makes me think they're just not selling rush seats at all for some shows. Which is understandable, if they're going to be able to sell those seats for full price fifteen minutes later.
I am wondering if it's worth it to try and get rush seats closer to curtain, if it's not sold out.

Well, since so many of you requested me review this ....
I saw Altar Boyz last night and thought it was a lot of fun. It's silly and sort of inconsequential, but amazingly, they manage to sustain what's basically a one-joke premise for a full 90 minutes. It's consistently inventive and very funny (I laughed out loud quite a bit). The lyrics and faux-boy band melodies are very clever and amusing -- it'll be worth picking up the cast album once it comes out because it's not only just funny, but (unlike, say, Avenue Q) will probably hold up to repeated listens since the songs are surprisingly well-crafted and work in and of themselves as catchy pop tunes.
The cast is flawless (Tyler Maynard is a scene-stealing standout), dancing and singing as well as and with as much polish as the guys from NSync, Back Street Boys etc.... (the choreography is dead on and incredibly physical and energetic).
A very fun show -- not deep or meaningful or intellectually stimulating (parody rarely is), but certainly lots of fun and the audience ate it up (the young girls next to me squealed throughout like Justin Timberlake was on the stage; I should also note that even the middle-aged and elderly folks in attendance seemed to really be enjoying themselves as well and left with smiles on their faces). Not sure if it's worth the $70 price tag, but that aside, I'd recommended it nonetheless.
