Hey guys,
This is my first time doing a review. Yet this is my second time seeing Altar Boyz. I saw it last January when it was in Iowa in the version that it was off Broadway. If you haven't seen the show do not read on.
I was in tears I was laughing so hard. The boyz aren't quite ready yet, but they will definately warm up now that they had an audience.
Matthew-Matthew Buckner
Great for the most part some of the vocals were a little weak but they will easily be ironed out.
Mark-Ryan J Ratliff
Absolutly a hoot. One of the strongest characters. Didn't go for the high notes at the end of Epiphany, but the notes he did use worked. I wish he would have gone for the higher notes.
Luke-Jesse JP Johnson
Another strong character. There was one thing that I didn't like towards the end, but I don't remember what it was.
Juan-Jay Garcia
Absolutely Amazing. Didn't have the accent at the beginning, but as the show went on it became stronger.
Abraham-Nick Blaemire
Strongest character in the whole show right now. He did an amazing job.
They all did a great job tonight.
Now to the songs.
They did amazing on all the songs. They started strong and got stronger as the show went on. I'll talk about the highlights in my oppinion.
Church Rulez-Choreography was in my opinion strongest in this song.
La Vida Eternal-Favorite song of the night. Jay Garcia had really warmed up and had gotten the spanish/mexican accent down. He ate this song up. When he broke down in tears it was absolutely hysterical. Nick Blaemire did a great job in the his verse of it. The final chorus when they through Abraham to the mike, when he went to get it out of the stand, he didn't get ahold of it right and it flew away a about a foot. He went and picked it up and went on with it and it worked. Have to love prop problems.
Epiphany-Ryan ate this song up and he did amazing.
I Believe-Abolutely heart wrenching. A very strong closing to the show.
Changes made from the other production.
All the costumes where changed. I liked the changes they made.
Soul sensor is a board that is lowered. I didn't think it as spectacular as the other one they had the previous time it was in Iowa. Although, I did like that they lowered it from above. I spent the beginning of the show trying to figure out where it was going to be.
In the final mix, they cut out the Rythm in Me section. I wasn't impressed by that cut. They also wore what looked like painters outfits. I wasn't to happy about that.
Over all I absolutely loved the show. Definately would give it a B+ or A-. With a little more work, this show will be ready and be amazing.

Posted: 10/8/06 at 12:50amI stayed away from this show in New York because I really did not like the Original Cast recording. When I was in New York in June, my friend there told me I had no choice, I had to go. I am so sorry that I judged the show by the recording. It was one of the best times I had in the theatre. Just a fun show.
