ALW @ LBC 1/29/05 Review: Sequel to Phantom??

This past Saturday night, my dad and I attended an Andrew Lloyd Webber tribute at the Luther Burbank Center in Santa Rosa. Valerie Perri (the first national tour Evita) was there---and fabulous. She made the evening worthwhile. It was four performers doing a musical review of ALW's life, alternating...kind of. Two of them were married, and stole the entire Phantom section---by stole, I mean they didn't let the other two sing the parts.
Sad, because the others were my favorites. Whatever.
Anyway, the other woman (two guys, two girls) sang a song called "The Heart is Slow to Learn," and announced it was from the planned sequel to Phantom of the Opera. Am I just really out of it? Has anyone else heard of such a thing?
Edited because I can't type today

Posted: 1/31/05 at 3:01pmThere were rumors going around that ALW wanted to write a sequel to Phantom, but I didn't think they had a grain of truth to them. *Blinks*

Posted: 1/31/05 at 3:13pmthis was done on his 50th Birthday Celebration DVD as well. very old news. in fact they should not have announced the song from the phantom sequel. it's simply an unproduced song at this point. all plans for a sequel have been dropped. it was going to be based on Susan Kay's novel PHANTOM. Webber recycled the tune into THE BEAUTIFUL GAME and Don Black recycled the title into DRACULA but with completely revised lyrics. Updated On: 1/31/05 at 03:13 PM

Posted: 1/31/05 at 3:23pmI believe that song in particular was put into "The Beautiful Game," rather than the sometimes mentioned sequel to "Phantom."

just what I said... the music for "The Heart Is Slow To Learn" was brought back, retiled, and lyrics rewritten -- and became "Our Kind of Love" for THE BEAUTIFUL GAME.
"The Heart Is Slow To Learn" is one of only two or three songs written for the sequel. the idea has been abandoned. that is why he used the music for THE BEAUTIFUL GAME.

*sigh*
I never wanted to be one of those people who started unsubstantiated rumors. I was just saying what I heard...I THOUGHT it was from a somewhat reliable source. They should really update their information.

Posted: 1/31/05 at 6:17pmit could work right? a sequel I mean? I mean this eliminates the relation to the book since the death of Erik was FINAL in the book, but I dunno....

The musical leaves a sequal wide open, and the movie leaves a sequal WIDE open. ((Beloved wife and mother... the red rose with the ring...))
The book doesn't really, unless the Persian lied. The only story left to be told is that of Christine and Raoul, which I could honestly care less to find out.

At his birthday celebration..in I think, 1999, Webber talked about a sequel to Phantom and introduced the song. It is lovely and at one time, it was supposed to have been considered being used in the film

Posted: 1/31/05 at 7:48pmDespite the changed lyrics from the original version of the song ( The Heart is Slow to Learn), OUR KIND OF LOVE from THE BEAUTIFUL GAME turned out to be another very beautiful song. The background of the musical was also very different from the story of the Phantom, as THE BEAUTIFUL GAME weaves the story around the theme of sectarian violence in Northern Ireland about a group of friends who were first brought together by the beautiful game ( as Pele calls the game of soccer).

Posted: 1/31/05 at 7:56pmYes, as CATS has said twice........the plans to make a phantom sequel is no more, THANK GOD!!! The melody of "The Heart is Slow To Learn" has been transformed into the BEAUTIFUL, AMAZING, HEARTFELT ballad called "Our Kind of Love." I have always loved the melody but the words to "The Heart is Slow to Learn," I hated with a passion.

Right about the sequel being dropped. Wrong about the book it was to be based on. The book was Frederick Forsyth's PHANTOM OF MANHATTEN. It was pretty bad and soon made its well deserved transition from the new books rack to the remainder table.
