I say go for the OLCR. It is performed live (with the applause and audience reactions taken out) and it adds a lot to the sound of it. I mean, when they do something on the recording, they are actually doing it on stage infront of hundreds of people instead of in a booth trying to do it the way they do on stage. It is AMAZING.

Also, it is one of those musicals that everytime you listen to it, it gets better and better.

I just found out that David Zippel did the lyrics!
Huge fan of his!
Thankfully it isn't Black or Hart.

Yes. Sometimes it gets a little too *lack of a better word* "corny" with the lyrics but majority of the time it is great. I think it is the best lyrics of ALW's musicals this side of Tim Rice.

...which is basically a sample of every single musical he wrote.
"Do you know what pledge time is, Andrew"? said the PBS Executive.
"Yes", Lloyd Webber replied. "My 50th birthday special must be one program that gets done a lot."
"No", mused the man from PBS heedlessy. "Not so much. Our Stephen Sondheim Carnegie Hall concert. That's a big one."
Spoons, forks and knives seemed suddenly to suspend their motion in horror, all around the table.

yes and as for Starlight Express. I love that show. its like CATS, a quintessential musical used to introduce a child to musical theatre. Starlight Express is about trains. who in there right mind would have write a musical about trains today?
need to defrag my brain.

I don't think so. I mean there was once or twice that I said, "That sounded like '_______'" but I have to disagree with you on this.

I agree, I think that some things may sound similar, mainly between shows that he did in cahoots w/ Tim Rice... but overall I think theyre pretty different...
as for Starlight Express, I would have to say that it's really the only musical of his that I can't stand... although it's kinda cool that they do it on rollerblades...

Despite being someone who, on a number of occasions has called CATS "a vile, disgusting stain on Musical Theatre" I must say yes. I LOVE Evita, Jesus Christ Superstar and Phantom. Those three cancel out Cats in my mind.
"This is what I trained to do, and this is what I love about theater. What I love about being an actress is being able to really look into myself and understand another human being. And out my own self, to shape and form and fashion a real human being--and to present that in such a way that people see something of themselves or their own understanding in that human being."

Like most artists, he has stengths and weaknesses, and triumphs and failures. I've always felt he could write some of the most beautiful melody lines.

Amen, DG. I think his love songs are the best out there. I mean, WOW!!! "Unexpected Song," "Love Changes Everything," "Wishing you were somehow here again, "Our Kind of Love," "I Don't Know How to Love Him," "Evermore Without You," etc. AMAZING!!

I'm not absolutely crazy about everything he's done, but he's definitely on the plus side with me. Most of his work is just beautiful (to my untrained and grateful ears).
