Orchestrations is the only one I'm really surprised (and disappointed) about - thought Kitt did a great job. I wasn't particularly impressed with Mayer's directing, though I suppose it's a bit of a snub that he wasn't recognized for either Idiot or Everyday Rapture.
I think either Sands, Esper, or Vincent would have been worthy of a nomination, but as Emcee and others have pointed out, their characters preclude any great depth and complexity in the performances.

Matt, as in many areas of life, I apply The Beatles Standard. They were shut out of the Grammy awards, having only won 11 while they were still together.
So anything under a dozen is a clear and obvious shut-out.
But Namo, is that the theatrical "in this case" standard, or is it different for every medium? When it comes to the Oscars, I consider anything under 15 nominations to be a shutout, which explains my Roscoe-esque disdain for 99% of all things cinematic.

You raise valid points in this case, but also universally. Irregardless, it was a shutout.

I wasn't aware that you can apply your own standards to a black-and-white term.
I'll admit that I was hoping for Stark Sands to land a nomination. Yet the thing that really bothers me is Orchestrations. The two strongest shows, in my opinion, were American Idiot and Sondheim on Sondheim. Both of these shows were "shutout" in that category. What the what??

In this case, you certainly can. You can even reverse a word's definition. In this case.

However, if frontrowcentre gets involved, he will invoke the irrevocable Variety standard: "Parker Preps Prod for Pitt Preem." Hit, flop, shutout.
Oh, I'm totally on board for that. I love lists.
American Idiot didn't even deserve a Best Musical Nomination because it's such a piece of trash. Sondheim on Sondheim or Come Fly Away should have taken it's spot. I'm only praying that Memphis takes the prize away from this "ground breaking piece of theater"

I think they Gallagher, Vincent and the rest of the cast performed great, but hoenstly there are much better actors and actresses out there who were just as good.

"shut out" means ZERO - as in NONE - i.e. the Yanks beat the Red Sox 5-0 - Sabathia pitched a "shut out" - get it?
just sayin'.

For years it's meant something else.
For those that don't like the baseball analogy (here and on other threads):
They slammed the door in her face and she was SHUT OUT of attending the party. She didn't get to go: AT ALL.
Therefore, SHUT OUT as a part of nominations, means they rec'd NONE.
This will go down with the arguments against shows that failed to break even financially being labled as flops.
Shut Out = NO nominations
Flop = Failed to return its investment.
NOT AN OPINION -- THESE ARE FACTS. You cannot just set your OWN definitions.
Whether YOU like something or not is an opinion. Whether you disagree with the nominations is an OPINION.
Gosh, these boards delve deeper and deeper into despair.

Honestly, as someone who has seen the show 4 times, and watched the Tonys, I'm amazed it was nominated at all. Let alone for Best Musical
I absolutely loved it, don't get me wrong- but I didn't see it as something that the Tonys would even consider.
I'm a bit disappointed that they didn't get a nomination for the choreography, though. Whether someone liked the choreography or not, I'm sure that you'd have to admit that it was intense. I definitely think a nomination there would have been deserved.
The choreography was certainly high octane, but I found it pretty repetitive. Those kids must be killing brain cells by the dozens with all the head-banging they're doing.
