re: ASSASSINATED: Closing Night on Broadway#28
Posted: 7/18/04 at 7:41pmMaybe, but it was extended to September, then unextended again due to poor advance ticket sales. That's sad.

Posted: 7/18/04 at 8:04pmI pass the theater 4 times a week. It's fascinating to see people getting progressively desperate since they posted the closing notice. Young girls almost in tears, confused asian tourists trying to understand why they can't get in, fat american tourists pleading with me to sell my ticket as I walk by (yeah honey, i would sell YOU a seat to this amazing show a week before it closes!)

You should have seen the cancellation line this weekend.
The %attendance for closing week should be good...

Posted: 7/18/04 at 8:52pmI'm so sad it's closing. It's truly an AMAZING show. I'm so happy I've already pre-ordered it at Amazon...

Posted: 7/19/04 at 12:17amThank God the producers had at least the common sense to at least try to capture the essence of one of the greatest theatrical displays in recent Broadway history.

re: ASSASSINATED: Closing Night on Broadway#35
Posted: 7/19/04 at 12:28amI doubt it, too. Someone would have noticed if they taped a performance professionally- that takes multiple cameras and other equipment. It's too bad, but I guess Assassins wasn't considered as worthy as other recent Sondheim productions of a quality preservation.

I was at the final performance tonight, and it was, indeed, sold out. There was a very different feel to tonight's show. When the lights went down, the audience gave an ovation. The audience also broke into applause during numbers (after various actors had solos)...and that tended to throw the timing off a little. But all things being equal, it was nice to see everyone being acknowledged. At the end, a standing ovation was immediate and spontaneous. Unlike other nights, the cast came out for a second curtain call before the house lights were turned up.
This remains my favorite Sondheim show (he was there, too, by the way). I'm sad that it's over, but happy to have had the opportunity to see it several times during the run.

Brand new here on the board. I'm so sad that this amazing musical has closed. I was hoping to make it back East to see it before the September closing. Guess I won't have to make that trip now.
I did Assassins in college. It was the only musical we did in my 5 years there. I played Emma Goldman and I fell in love with the show. Did this production keep the song in the second act after Kennedy's assassination? Can't remember the name of it. It's the one with the housewife and the people from across the centuries mourning.
My favorite line, "SH*T, I shot it!" I just love Moore's whole bit in "The Gun Song".
Anyway, so sorry I missed it. I'll definitely have to pick up the new soundtrack when it comes out.

"You are a VERY handsome woman..."
"I am more than great. I am extraordinary. I am to be reckoned with. I am to be the next ambassador to France."
I'm so sad...

Posted: 7/19/04 at 1:40pmAssassins is my favorite Sondheim also, and last nights show was excellent. I don't know if you could see it from the back but Jeffrey Kuhn (Zangara) cried through the whole first number, it was really, really sad.
re: ASSASSINATED: Closing Night on Broadway#42
Posted: 7/19/04 at 1:45pmUnfortunately I didn't get to see Assassins... I'd been counting on an extension, and then when there wasn't one I just wasn't able to get to the city for it, but just reading these posts makes me really sad. It's such a shame.

I was in Virgin records yesterday, and noticed they had a CD of Assassins for sale - along with the other current Broadway recordings.
Does anyone know - is that this Broadway cast recording, or another recording? I didn't have the chance to look at it closely... it had a blue cover with white markings on it...

Posted: 7/19/04 at 3:36pmThis was the original off-broadway recording. I prefer the new cast better, but this cd holds me over until August 3rd. The new cast adds more life to the music.

Posted: 7/19/04 at 3:58pmI love the OB cast recording, Ive listened to it for years. Its absolutely worth having, in addition to the new cast of course.

I was at the final performance.....I have to admit that I shed several tears during the curtain call - not to mention that I had not taken a full breath since I walked into Sondheim getting to my table.
The cast was in top form....everyone was emotional. It was a wonderful and sad experience. I still can't believe it is over!
