Saw Assassins this afternoon. After being disappointed that Neil Patrick Harris was not going to be in, I didnt know what to expect having never heard the score or read the script.
Boy was I in for a treat! This was a brilliant production of a brilliant musical. The score is magnificent, and the book soars.
The performances only help make this the best musical Ive seen all year. Michael Cerveris was incredible, and my pick for the Tony. Mario Cantone was hilarious, and James Barbour was amazing as well. Mary Catherine Garrison was my favorite out of the whole cast, giving a real star performance. I hope the Tony voters caught what I saw. Also some great acting by Denis O'Hare with a great song, and the always wonderful Marc Kudisch, and Becky Ann Baker who has a great scene with Mary Catherine Garrison. And NPH's understudy, Chris P. He displayed a great voice and his acting was fine.
As you can see, every member of this terrific ensemble really stood out. The lighting was remarkable, and the sets and costumes were great as well.
I urge you all to catch this show before it leaves us. If all new musicals brought to Broadway what Assassins did, we would be in heaven.
