For what it's worth:

Mister Cellophane (Chicago)
Being Alive (Company - be careful overused song so it depends on the audition)
Johanna (Sweeney Todd)
Bring Him Home (Les Mis - also used a lot)
Some Girls (OOTI)
Corner of the Sky (Pippin - again possible overuse)
Pretty Lady (Pacific Overtures - usually a duet but can be done as a solo)

Okay, you are starting to become irritating. You have two post going on the same subject and you keep bumping both of them. If someone has an answer for you they will post it but if you continue to annoy people you'll get nothing.

DO NOT sing anything Sondheim.
DO NOT sing a song which belongs to a performer, such as "Defying Gravity" which is Idina Menzel's. DO NOT sing "Memory" as it belongs to Betty Buckley.

I'd go with a song you feel comfortable singing.

DO NOT choose a song that has any notes out of your range, or a note you sometimes hit, sometimes miss. Every note you sing should feel comfortable to your voice.

"The Spectacle has, indeed, an emotional attraction of its own, but, of all the parts, it is the least artistic, and connected least with the art of poetry. For the power of Tragedy, we may be sure, is felt even apart from representation and actors. Besides, the production of spectacular effects depends more on the art of the stage machinist than on that of the poet."

"DO NOT sing anything Sondheim."

How can you make such a blanket statement. Do you know who this person is auditioning for?

Memory belongs to Elain Paige more than Betty Buckley and it has been recorded so many times it doesn't belong to anyone actually. No one knows who Idina Menzel is anyway.

The person requesting a song has not auditioned much, and therefore probably does not have too much theatre experience.

If they are requesting a song, that tells you something right there.

So therefore, regardless of talent, do NOT do Sondheim. ESPECIALLY if there is an acompanymist. You do not know the skill level of this person, and they may mess you up. In addition, most of his songs are:

A) Hard to sing (if not vocally, time-wise).
B) Sung too frequently for auditions.

That is how I can make such a statement.

Trust me, after watching well over 200 auditions this past weekend, I know what I'm talking about.

"Memory belongs to Elain Paige more than Betty Buckley..."

True.

Still, you don't want to sing a song that makes you think of a DIFFERENT performer.

I agree about the Sondheim thing- heaven knows I worship the guy's music, but it's not fun to play on piano. And I've been playing since I was 6 years old.

And you know what? You could lay off the Caps Lock and stick to one exclamation point (or better yet, none) and still make the same point. Or, you know, write Urgent! or something. Updated On: 11/7/04 at 02:10 PM

Well, I guess that you also know what EVERY director wants then. I have people audition for me all the time and I find that if they can sing Sondheim, they can pretty much sing anything. So, for me it's more of a plus if I can hear him done well or even pretty good. It tells me what the actor is capable of.

I guess I must also have a pretty good accompanist because playing Sondheim has never been a problem for him.

Yes, your acompanyist must be pretty good.

Again, I am speaking to someone who probably does not have a lot of audition experience. Therefore, don't do Sondheim. It's probably too much for you.

If you have the experience, if you have the talent, and you're singing to a CD or tape - then by all means, go for it.

Even still - chances are the song you choose will have been heard by the director too often (not just in that one audition, but ones in the past).

There's relatively obscure Sondheim. It's not like everyone will do "Send in the Clowns" or "Being Alive." :)

Yeah, if you're going to do Sondheim, do one of his few normal songs that actually sound like music like Send in the Clowns or As Long As He Needs Me.

"As Long As He Needs Me"

Um . . . . please tell me what Sondheim that song is from.
