AUDITION SONGS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Posted: 11/7/04 at 4:00pmYes, I would guess that most of the people on this Board, except bronxboundexpress, will know that. I'm constantly surprised at the lack of "facts" on this board.

Posted: 11/7/04 at 4:12pmIs there some kind of theatre test I was supposed to pass before I'm allowed to post on this board? Do you realize that theatre is not my number one hobby? I'm sorry I made the mistake. Please forgive me and do not burn me at the stake. Lionel Bart wrote OLIVER. Stephen Sondheim wrote A LITTLE NIGHT MUSIC and I only know that because I was in that show in high school. I'm not like you guys. I'm not a theatre freak.

"Is there some kind of theatre test I was supposed to pass before I'm allowed to post on this board?"
Not at all, but you should at least know of what you speak. You say things with authority and don't know the facts. Everyone else on this board is called on to get their facts straight (sometimes by you) so why not you?
"Lionel Bart wrote OLIVER. Stephen Sondheim wrote A LITTLE NIGHT MUSIC and I only know that because I was in that show in high school. I'm not like you guys. I'm not a theatre freak."
If you were in that show in high school, you should then also know that those songs are NOT for a male tenor, which is what the original post was asking for.

Posted: 11/7/04 at 5:35pm"Send in the clowns" is a female song, if he is looking for a male tenor song, he shouldn't sing it.

"SEND IN THE CLOWNS is a female song..."
Oh, really? Tell that to Frank Sinatra.
The song is not gender-specific.

'"Send in the Clowns" isn't gender-specific, but I imagine it's terribly overdone.'
i agree, with that statement...i actually got a very large role because i auditioned with that song. I'm a bass and i just had them drop the octive. and made it into a slight comedy piece.

I agree, if you can sing Sondheim you can pretty much sing anything.
HOWEVER, Sondheim is very much an acquired taste, which can count against you if the casting panel utterly loathe Sondheim.
Point 2, it's extremely difficult for accompanists, especially the more obscure stuff which they may not know. If they don't know it, they can't improvise (which most accompanists do when presented with new pieces) as Sondheim never writes chord symbols in so if you're unsure as you're sight-reading it you're screwed. You can't make things any easier for yourself by improvising around the chord. So the pianist may completely****up and that will then confuse the singer.
