Great, no tour and far away from NY and Vegas.

Posted: 6/10/04 at 10:03amI guess the "little show with heart" is too big to mount a tour.

Yes. Boo that.
I am not terribly thrilled with this new attitude. Ticket prices, cancelled tour, it's very disappointing.

Posted: 6/10/04 at 10:40amThat's really terrible. I really wanted it to come on tour. I miss living in NYC, and it's nice when shows come down here to DC. They're really doing the theatre world a disservice. There's no way that they wouldn't make plenty of money on the road. At least WICKED is still planning on touring, especially since it's a better show.

I dont boo....first off more $ to the creators. 2nd its good to have a show that will work in vegas sit down there. It may not play well across the country and in big venues. The scale of the show must be small (stage width etc...). BOO yes to all the theatre goers who cant see it across the country
that is the only down for. But it is a great decision for the show. Maybe in 2 years it will have a successful tour. SO to sum it up... im sorry to all of you not near NYC or vegas... and im happy the show has become a success and will have a theatre made for it. But then again half the people who live across the country and on this board already have the boot... hehe love ya all.

We are not booing that it will play in Vegas, we are booing that a lot of people will NOT get to see it now.
It sucks to be me.

"which is set to open in fall 2005 in a $40 million theatre that will be built especially for the musical."
That's just so bizarre. And it's funny how the crassness quotient just goes through the roof once Vegas people start talking. "The only place you'll be able to see it is NY and Vegas...," you'd swear this was a Visa commercial.
It's also kind of a long time before it opens. And how long will non-gen-x-ers be able to sustain it in Vegas?

Quitcherbellyachin'. I'm used to this. There are a lot of museum shows that NEVER come to MOMA or the Met.
If I want to see them badly enough I pool my pennies and shlep to Boston, Chicago, DC or L.A.

dano says:
"I guess the "little show with heart" is too big to mount a tour. "
Actually, the show is TOO LITTLE to mount a tour. That's the problem - tour venues are usually huge, cavernous theatres, too large for this intimate show.
I'm very sad that Avenue Q won't tour, but I understand why. Still, ONLY Vegas and NYC? Why not some permanent productions in LA, Toronto, San Francisco, and other large theatre markets?

But 1200 seats ain't exactly teeny.
Master's right tho, people near big city airports can usually get to Vegas dirt cheap... and rooms are cheap... and life is cheap... Just don't gamble.

I wonder if all of the regional Tony voters are angry that the show won't be coming to their market?
I agree that 1200 is a little big for the show--I forget how many the Golden seats. However, many of the theatres it would tour are 2000+ houses. I bet a tour and/or other sit down cities happen after Vegas gets to enjoy its exclusivity for a spell.

Posted: 6/10/04 at 12:20pmI heard that Vegas is changing the city slogan from "What happens in Vegas, stays in Vegas" to "GIVE US YOUR MONEY!"

"It sucks to be broke!"

Posted: 6/10/04 at 12:21pmI think they should now definitely record the show for DVD if a Tour won't happen.

Posted: 6/10/04 at 12:22pmThe Golden houses about 800 seats. So 1200 is larger, but I think still manageable. Besides, it all depends on the theatre architecture anyway. Especially if this new venue is "specially designed" for Avenue Q.

Posted: 6/10/04 at 1:04pmGive me a break, no Broadway theatre is exactly small. There are plenty of places that a show that size could go to around the country. Like the Kennedy Center Eisenhower theatre. As pointed out, the Vegas theatre will be larger than the Golden. There's no legit reason this show shouldn't tour, and I'm quite upset about it.

Yeah, I'm pretty upset about it too, but check out the long threads on the All That Chat board (is it a crime to send people to another board? I dunno....). Seems most venues for tours have capacities of 2000+ seats, and smaller shows like Urinetown and 'Tick tick tick...BOOM!' have been suffering on the road. The producers of Avenue Q - who were once touring agents, by the way - seem to be reading the writing on the wall.
Still, a tour would have been very nice, if not the smartest thing, financially.

Of course there's a legit reason the show shouldn't tour. The producers don't want it to. They got a more lucrative deal. That's a legit enough reason for me.

Posted: 6/10/04 at 1:54pmSupposedly the Mirish family in TO were looking @ this The Winter Garden would have been a perfect size & let's face it the show is cheap to produce- Limited set changes no costume changes no big chorus numbers no big orchestras/orchestrations. a producers wet dream!

Yeah. The show would be great in Toronto.
Do you think this deal is limited to the US? I don't remember reading 'international' rights.
