AVE Q in Buffalo

The touring AVE Q has been in Buffalo this week and I just got home from the Sunday matinee. It is in terrific shape. Set, lighting and all technical things are great.
The cast is mostly wonderful. Many of them from the Las Vegas version. Robert McClure is fantastic as Rod/Princeton. Wonderful singer, great actor and excellent with the puppet manipulation. I would really like to see him in a show without the puppets as he would have to be a great performer.

There were only two reservations for the performers. Kelli Sawyer was lack luster as Kate Munster/Lucy. She seemed to not really be into character and her mouth coordination for the puppets was off. Her costume also made her look as if she were pregnant. In fact one of the ladies next to me asked if she migh be. She also did not project her voice well, even with the mike.Giving her the benefit of a doubt, maybe she was saving herself for the second show.
The other problem was Angela Ai as Christmas Eve. She had the tendency to shout her lines making it difficult to underdand about half of her diaglogue.
Even with the reservations, it is a terrific touring show. If they were going to be here a second week, I definitely would go back.

I also saw Avenue Q this week in Buffalo. I really enjoyed the show. I wasn't too sure how Buffalo audiences were going to like the show, but have to say, for the most part everyone knew what they were getting into and really enjoyed the show. Robert McClure as Princeton and Rod was fantastic! I saw it on Broadway with John Tartaglia. I love seeing different interpretations. Loved Roberts line....."you cant put your finger there.....put your finger there!"

Kelli Sawyer had a fantastic voice. She really got to show off during "Fine Fine Line." Her puppetry didn't bother me at all.

I thought the puppetry was excellent. I really found myself watching the puppets more than the actors.

Angela Ai as Christmas Eve was great. Her curtain speech on Friday night for Broadway Cares was hysterical. She screamed at everyone, in her Christmas Eve voice, "Sit DOWN......SIT DOWN......SIT DOWN...." as soon as everyone was quiet she said "I just want you all to know I don't really talk like this." Very funny.

I also don't think the show was lost in the large theatre. They obviously only used about 3/4ths of the stage but really used the space well. It could have worked for me because I was in the 4th row and not in the last few rows of the Balcony...

I'd love to her what other people thought.....

I saw Keli Sawyer when she filled in for Mary Faber in November of 2006 and loved her..what a voice....and btw....maybe it is the theater you saw Q in...but in the golden on broadway she was fantastic..

I also saw it in Buffalo, and it was fantastic.

I didn't think it lost anything in the larger space. I also agree, Kelli Sawyer was amazing; best part of the show in my mind.

Did anyone else see Lea Diagnault as Nicky/Treekie? He was great.

Saw it in St. Louis and loved it! Glad you did too!

I saw it too. I love this show!!! And I think the whole cast is amazing!

BTW, it was Cullen R. Titmas as Nicky/Trekkie. Leo Daignult was in the ensemble.

I saw the show here in Buffalo too... twice actually. I saw the Saturday night performance and then dragged a friend (who hates musicals) to the Sunday matinee. Both times the cast was amazing! I knew pretty much nothing about the show going into it and in the past 24 hours, it has quickly grown on me.

I thought Robert McClure was WONDERFUL. Great voice, great acting.. and yes, I loved his delivery of "PUT YOUR FINGER THERE!" Hysterical.

I also have to agree with most of the other posters. I thought Kelli Sawyer as Kate Monster was the highlight of the show. Her voice was soft and sweet one moment in "THERE'S A FINE, FINE LINE," then powerful yet controlled the next. What a beautiful song. She also got the biggest applause at the curtain call from the audience at the Sunday matinee. And btw... she IS pregnant. I heard her say so in an interview this week.

Overall.. I was very impressed and glad I went back to see it a second time. It made me appreciate the brilliance of this show...and its very talented cast... even more. Bravo!

To clear up some confusion, the insert in the program was a notice that Leo Daignault had just joined the cast as "Ensamble,u/s Nicky/Trekkie/Bear & others, u/s Brian" not that he was playing a part today.

I did not mean to suggest that Kelli Sawyer was not good, I just thought she lacked some energy and admit she got a great hand at the curtain call, but I really thought Robert McClure received a bigger one and he was in the last position coming out. She was just before him and the applause for him built on hers.

Anyway, it's a WONDERFUL company for a terrific show.

Well, the fact is Kelli just twasn;t that good on Wednesday night!

Could barely hear or understand her when singing or speaking at the beginning of the show, and still sang the quietest of the cast for the rest of it. I thought it was going ot be a bigger problem than it turned out to be.

All the others were great!

I keep thinking back to the day I was in line for season tickets and the old man behind me described the show to his bride as "Some kind of adult Sesame Street with porno!" HAHA!

Nobody walked out the night I was there, and the place was more filled than I had anticipated. Thankfully, in this town, the folks know to at least give away their tickets to family or friends if they have any doubt about the show!

I had seen the original Vegas cast with Rick and John and some of the cast from back then was in this tour, along with some of the set pieces used for Vegas - including the giant inflatable KATE - WOOHOO!!

Overall, a great night of fun at the theater! GO SEE IT!
