Just a speculation. Is Cry-Baby beginning to be a guilty pleasure? I'm starting to think about going again (if nothing else, the abs are worth a visit). Don't get me wrong -- I'm a Xanadu supporter from the get-go and will be so until my dying breath -- Huzzah! for the most fun in years!
But when you stack it up, CB entertained me well enough and while I can respect Passing Strange and In the Heights, have no great desire to see either again. Just my thought.
I'm with you on this, ed. I am a big Xandau fan(adu)...but I've been back to see Cry Baby a couple times...and I wanna go again!! I'm double happy that both shows are nominated!!!!
I happened to be in the city today but the plans I had were cancelled so I just went to the Cry Baby box office and ended up with pretty good seats for tonight. The energy in the show and in the audience (which may have been full. It certainly seemed full) was amazing. Standing ovation in the orchestra at the end as well. I'm getting really excited about it even if it doesn't win.
Today, I brought people with me who had no desire to see Cry Baby but they ended up loving it and said they'd love to go back and see the show again. General buzz in the audience was also very enthusiastic. I was paying attention to reactions after the show and I didn't hear one bad thing. Everyone seemed very happy.

I am not a regular commenter, so you can't simply call me one of the regular "haters," but I just don't get it -- "Cry Baby" is just awful, and I don't get the folks on this site continually defending this show. This is the one and only show that I have ever seen (and I see most everything) where I wanted to leave at intermission. And most everyone I know who has seen it feels the same way.
Like many others on this site, I was rather shocked at the show's Tony success. Maybe there's a show for everyone, and this one is just not for me (or really anyone I know). Sorry -- don't mean to be rude, but it just confounds me.
most don't, DrewBill. you're not alone
there appears to be a small creepy cult of CB lovers out there though.
and while the nominations are an upset, they're just nominations. not awards. some have gotten overly excited about nominations but it doesn't mean much.
the show is still struggling - and no box office grosses or wealthy investors will tell you that... they don't want the public to know. but believe me, it is.
creepy? too funny.
Drew, you aren't crazy. If you saw it early in previews, you may want to check it out again before you write it off because many people feel that it got a lot better. If you saw it after it opened, then it just isn't your cup of tea.
I personally can't stand watching Patti Lupone play a role because all I see is her and not a character. I mean ever. Still, people seem very moved by her and jump to their feet.
Now that CB has a nomination, they will get some TV exposure (e.g. the view, maybe the today show) and a performance at the Tonys. At that point tourists will decide if they want to see the show (I mean, it does seem much more up there alley than the smaller prestige musicals that opened and they eat up Mamma Mia so quality doesn't seem to be a quantifier). I'm guessing the show is losing around $200k a week, but those producers have deep pockets and I'd bet money they ride it out until at least the Tonys to have a shot at making back their investment.
deep pockets? or perhaps just deep throating?
sorry... it's late. and I just couldn't resist
many of the shows can financially afford to limp for an extra 2 - 3 months but that's about it. C-B or ACA will probably be next to go. depending on the Tony results

BrianS: I saw "Cry Baby" in previews, about a week before opening. Unless they changed something like ... I don't know ... the songs, then you're right -- it's simply not my cup of tea. (Sorry, I couldn't help being so glib -- it's late.)
