Actor Charles Siebert, 84, passed away from complications of COVID-related pneumonia on May 1. His family made the news public the other day.
Many may remember him from television in the 70s - 90s, as he co-starred on such shows as 'One Day At A Time' (playing Bonnie Franklin's boss 'Mr. Davenport'
and 'Trapper John, MD' (playing 'Dr. Stanley Riverside, chief of emergency surgery' as well as guest appearances on other shows, before he turned to directing in the 90s.
However, Siebert got his start on Broadway in 1967 in a play called 'Galileo', and remained close to the theater throughout his career. In 1968-69, he starred opposite Dustin Hoffman in 'Jimmy Shine; in 1970 - 71, Siebert played opposite actress Maureen Stapleton in 'The Gingerbread Lady'. He continued on with plays and made his last Broadway appearance in the 1974-75 revival of "Cat on a Hot Tin Roof" along with Elizabeth Ashley and Fred Gwynne.
Siebert moved to Sonoma County in 1992 and continued to act and direct on stages in the area.
“Charlie was never one to over-compliment, or gush, or flatter,” Craig A. Miller, former artistic director of the 6th Street Playhouse in Santa Rosa, wrote in a tribute to the actor. “He was serious about his craft; he worked hard, and he expected everyone around him to do the same. He lifted us all to a new level of theatricality and magic. As an actor, he didn’t want the praise — he wanted the damn notes.”
