Actors & Directors?

How much does a director work with the actors on their performances? Was thinking about this today. In a huge show like Groundhog Day or Natasha, I just wonder how much time is spent on actual moment to moment work and finding the character, or if maybe that takes more focus during previews when all the technical elements are out of the way? I've not been involved in a huge multi-million project, so I don't know the answer and was curious what the process would be like!
