Sorry to take up an entire thread on this, but I searched and didn't really see anything relevant so yeah...
Anyways, I'm seeing Rent in August solely to see Adam and Anthony. I've never really stagedoored before, and I'm positive that it is going to be an absolute mob, but I would *really* like to meet both of them when I go. My sister and I are both fans of their work outside of Rent and were hoping to maybe get a dvd (SLC Punk) and/or cd (Look Around) signed instead of a playbill. I'm not really sure of "stage door etiquette" and was wondering if it would be considered rude to have them sign something not Rent related.
I'm just curious about this whole process and looking for someone with experience to give me the "low-down" so I don't embarass myself. Thanks!
PS: This is my first post on BWW, so hi!

It all depends on the actor and what you are having them sign. For example Matthew Broderick won't sign anything Ferris Buller related but some actors like David Hyde Pierce doesn't mind. You might want to Bump this thread up after they have joined RENT and people have stage doored the show while they were in it.
Edit: Last year Anthony was happy to sign a Little Shop of Horrors playbill for me at his Book Signing.

Ask them to sign anything you want. If it's really ABOVE them, you don't want their autograph anyway. But from what I hear, both are very nice guys.

Yeah, I'm sure they'd be happy to sign something not Rent related. I know a lot of people who brought the Rent bible to Anthony's book signing and he signed it for them. Again I agree with the person who said it depends on the actor. But I'm pretty sure they'd be okay with it.

I wonder if either/or both of them would come out after a matinée.
Anyone have any idea?
I'm sure neither of them would have a problem with it.
I've never seen Adam after a theater show, but after his solo concert shows he has never had a problem singing anything. The more abstract the item, the more interest he had actually. Someone in front of me had some rare piece of RENT memorabilia (I forget what is was), and Adam talked to her for a few minutes about it.

Both Adam and Anthony are extremely nice and grateful to their fans, and I've never heard anything about either of them being unwilling to sign anything. But I have heard rumors that they may not come out after Rent this summer at all due to the fact that it WILL be a complete mob scene. Supposedly, they may be escorted in and out of the theatre by security. While I'm kind of disappointed, I really don't blame them. Some fangirls can get pretty dangerous sometimes, especially in large numbers lol.
I'm sure they'll sign almost anything. What I'd be more worried about are the bodies that will inevitably be crushed when Adam and Anthony appear eight times a week at the absolute worst-organized "stage door" on the planet...
When I met Anthony a couple years ago, I had him sign Look Around and it was no problem at all. In fact, he wrote a personalized note on it and everything. Extremely nice guy. Adam was very nice as well when I met him. I hope they come out, and everything works out for you!

There is no doubt that it's going to be insane. They'll probably have to use baracades if Anthony and Adam do come out. That would kind of suck though because the thing I love most about stagedooring Rent is that there are no baracades. I'd rather them not come out at all then have them put up baracades.

If they do come out (which would be nice)- there should be some sort of announcement:
"Anthony and Adam will get around to take pictures and sign for everyone so please be patient and do not crowd around."
SweetQ - unfortunately that announcement would be ignored by 90% of the crowd.

Didn't they set up barricades for Joey Fatone? Or was that Drew Lachey? I feel like at some point, the Nederlander had barricades for stage door purposes. But they disappeared as the celebs disappeared.
I highly doubt they'll be escorted in and out of the theater with a security guard who will forbide them to interact with any fans. These men are not Julia Roberts (and even she signed stuff). Although, I guess some Rent fans would compare them to her.
That announcement is made and ignored at every other stagedoor on Broadway, Tink. Not just Rent fans.

Drew Lachey never had barricades.

joey fatone did so did jai rodriguez when he came back in 2004 which was kinda funny to me.. i think mel b had barricades too.. as much as i want to go, i'm almost scared for my life of the fans at the door lol.
Adam was very sweet to my friends and I when we met him before one of his concerts last year. We actually chatted for about 15 minutes. He signed my friend's show because she didn't have anything else for him to sign, so I doubt he would have a problem signing your DVD.
skittles - I don't doubt it. I've only stage doored once and there were barricades, so the "don't crowd" announcement was not necessary.
They're both absolutely wonderful -- Adam is friendly, funny and I know firsthand that he will do almost anything you ask; Anthony is sweet and kind. They're both great guys who are very gracious to their fans, and they'd be completely fine signing stuff related to parts of their career other than Rent. In fact, they'd probably both be flattered that you're into their other work.

Can I just say how much this made me smile? Are they living in the theatre for the six weeks they're in the show? :)
Special cocoons.
And I guess we're to assume they've alerted people to these hermit-like plans!
Thanks guys :) I've also heard that they were both extremely nice to their fans I just didn't want to make a complete @$$ out of myself if I asked them to sign something that wasn't Rent...
While I can't say that I would blame them, I would be incredibly disappointed if they skipped out on the stage door scene, but hey what can you do, at least I get to see them perform.
i hope that if they do use the baracades that some of the other cast members would come out the regular way. And i too am rather scared to stage door AND lotto when they're here.
