Someone said it wasn't that he didn't want to, but that he couldn't because of the time constraints. If there's time, trust me, he has no problem posing for photos.

Here's a first-hand account from IMDb:

A bunch of us raced towards him, but these burly security guards escorted him into the nearest store and stood guard outside. We waited for about ten minutes, while official people talked to Adam. After a while, the people left, but the security guards still blocked the way. I heard bits of conversation, and Adam arguing (stuff like "they're standing out in the *beep* sun") and then he came out smiling, and said, "come over here, guys," and he brought us to an open place and he began to sign autographs. Because of time, we couldn't do pix, but that's life.

I didn't hear why he couldn't take pix but that makes sense. He was really sweet.

Thanks!

the ultimate destination is actually back to Broadway.

... but in a musical written for him. So... he went to Hollywood to build up his credentials in order to make people want to write him stuff. Interesting.

Someone please write this man a musical. I want him to come home.

The Broadway-through-Hollywood idea doesn't make too much sense to me. If he wants someone to write material suited to him, I think it would make just as much, if not more, sense to suck it up and play a part on Broadway that he isn't thrilled with to showcase his talent. Getting some guest spots on Law and Order and the like isn't going to compel someone to write material suited to you.

Maybe it's part of some bigger plan that I'm just not seeing, but I don't see the logic behind what he's doing.

He needs to either hire a new publicist or open his mouth only to sing. This is not the first time I've read an interview with him where he's come off as having a sense of entitlement disproportionate to reality and he's denigrated whatever he is not doing at the moment. He may be nice to his fans, but he comes off in print like a giant ass.

I think the whole "plan" is at least reassuring in that he *does* want to return to Broadway, but... my thoughts on the whole thing, even as one of his biggest fans, are sort of... well, by thirty-five, he should know to get his head out of the clouds. He's not going to FIND Hollywood stardom, especially not at the level he seems to think he might, and at one that will skyrocket him enough to have someone write him a musical. I think it's thought out, but done so in naivete.

I admire his bold ambition and his brutal honesty, but... come on, Adam.

Agreed Emcee and Siamese. While I think that he can pull off the Hollywood stardom with time, I also believe that he's not going to be able to live up to his own standards so soon, especially in the Hollywood industry. Also, how many stars have show written specifically for them? Yeah it's happened, but I don't know if it will happen for Adam, despite how much I want it to.

But... time is already against him, because he's sort of past the age for creation of a Hollywood star. More time isn't what he needs, he needs to be ten years younger.

I wonder if he truly meant that someone should sit down and write a show FOR him, or rather than he wants to originate a role in a new show, and be with it from its early stages, so that changes and new things on it will be written with him in mind. One is far more feasible and less entitled than the other.

I didn't get from the article anything about expecting to become a big star. It was more a hope engendered by the completely out-of-the-blue casting in the Rent movie, that was then dashed by what happened with the movie. I think the writer may have confused things by conflating his feelings during and after the movie. After all, he did say he's had to deal with things not turning out the way he'd hoped. But now he's out there and making the best of it by working on his own music.

Sorry Emcee, I sold my car the other day (it was time to let it go!!) so this weekend is all about car hunting (and baby showers) for me. No time to fit in a show, but I'll be waiting to read about it as well. :)

Wowsers, am I the first one posting a review? The pressure! All right, here goes. It's late, so forgive my rambling:

Here's the songs I remember, not in order:

Beautiful Song
Book of Endings
Liken a Razor
Maybe This Time (from Cabaret)
Maria (from West Side Story)
Model Prisoner
What I Did For Love (from A Chorus Line)
One Song Glory (more on this later)
I'm With You

And three new songs - one he wrote for Cybele, one I think was called Just Like I Am, and one I think was called A Single Drop of You.

New songs were good, I thought. Seemed structurally more sophisticated than his past stuff. It was just Adam on guitar (acoustic and electric bass) and Larry Edoff on piano, so the Civilian songs that are (imo) so over arranged on the album sounded much better stripped down, more troubadour style. I think I'm With You is such a pretty song, and he did it much better than he did it on The View.

Based on this show and what he posted on his MySpace blog, I guess he's trying to do some risky covers of more traditional Bway songs, hence the versions of Maria, Maybe This Time, and What I Did For Love. I wasn't fond of any of them and I'm not sure what audience will respond to them, but if it makes Adam happy, fine. He did Maria very jazzy with a heavy bass line and wailed out Maybe This Time. What I Did For Love was the last song he performed and his voice sounded shot towards the end. He even hocked up a loogie onstage trying to loosen everything up.

Glory was unbelievable. It's like the song inhabits him at this point, he does the same movements he did during the Rent performances, and the song totally exploits his pretty, pretty dipthongs. Honestly, I liked most of the show, but Glory was the only time it felt really magical to me.

He was so charming you wanted to eat him with a spoon. It's been a long time since I've seen him do his own material live and he's much more relaxed, telling funny stories and making jokes and talking back to the audience. His stage demeanor was just delightful. He joked that his usual audience was there - "girls and gay men." He said the song he wrote for Cybele got him laid. He said he thinks the internet is like a cute little dog, where you want to play with it and pet it but you know it's going to turn around and bite you. He said he spends way too much time reading career advice on chat boards from 14 year girls (hmm, what boards would that be, I wonder?).

The crowd was pretty subdued and respectful. Wilson Heredia was three rows in front of me and lasted about three minutes before he started getting hounded for photos and autographs. He was very sweet and patient with everyone. I think Tracie Thoms snuck in just as the show began. If that was her she looked adorable.

Oh, and I guess I should have mentioned this right off the bat, Adam looked fiiiiine. Blue patterned short sleeve button down, jeans, looked like Chuck Taylors. The silver necklace (I heard that was a gift from Cybele - can anyone confirm?). Maybe it was the lights or the LA living, but he looked like he had a nice tan, which goes well with the blond hair.

Hope I covered everything for those of you who couldn't be there. Can't feel too bad for you since this is the first time he's played LA in the ten years I've been a fan. I don't love all his material or his choices, but that's still the best rock singing voice I've ever heard.

Yay, thank you!! Finally, a detailed post! :)

Do you know Adam's song called Mesmerized? It's old, but not on either of the CD's; I'm wondering if that's the one he sang that he wrote for Cybele, or if he has a new one.

LOL at the chat board comment; he should stick to one story, though, considering he claims to be kind of computer-inept. That's great that Wilson (and maybe Tracie) were there to support him, too.

Thanks again for posting all of that; you have no idea how much I appreciate it. I'm glad you liked the show!

I cannot wait to see him in the fall.

Oh, good, Emcee, glad you liked the review.

No, I'm not familiar with Mesmerized (and I have a lot of boots) so that could have been the song and I don't know it. It was a very pretty song with something in the chorus about "can you see me shining?" and "lead me to life, lead me to love." Sound familiar?

Glad you had a good time and thanks for the detailed review! With all the people that posted about how excited they were to finally have a west coast show, they sure didn't say much about the actual show!

He said the song he wrote for Cybele got him laid.
It doesn't count if it's your wife. That's like, a legal obligation.

He said he spends way too much time reading career advice on chat boards from 14 year girls (hmm, what boards would that be, I wonder?).
*gets offended because I haven't been 14 for awhile* We were so dependent on him being computer-retarded, but stuff keeps popping up to the contrary. I'm still freaked out over the Sound of Music incident.

He even hocked up a loogie onstage trying to loosen everything up.
*gives career advice* Girls and gay guys think habits like this are disgusting, dear.

When he first publicized that he was going to sing "Maria," someone mistook the song from WSS for the other Maria -- the one in The Sound of Music.

At one of his gigs on the Spring college tour, he comes out on stage, belts out a line from The Sound of Music, and then says something like "not what you expected, was it?" We totally thought he had read the boards. It's still a mystery!
