If you were advising a young performer just starting out, would you say it's required to have an agent? Why or why not? Pros and cons of agents in general? One of the things that puzzles me is agents negotiating contracts who aren't lawyers- I know that negotiating is something done in business everyday, but shouldn't you have to have a lawyer review it(obviously stars have regularly retained lawyers)? Agents aren't lawyers, which brings up complicated legal questions if they are advising their clients since only lawyers can give "legal advice" and may lack the rounded out understanding of the legal language in contracts, especially compared with in-house legal teams at companies like Disney, Fox, and law firms that routinely serve entertainment businesses while not being in house? How do you think the balance between agents finding work for their clients and the client being proactive in their careers should be divided and how do you think the balance is divided currently?
