Is any one else tired of all these films being made into broadway musicals ? To me it seems pointless because most of the films they are makeing into musicals, many people have seen already. So we basically are going to the theatre to see something that we already seen and know how the show will end. It seems like a waste of money to me. Broadway needs more original shows.
Ahhhhh when will it stop ???
When will people realize that Broadway has never had an abundance of original shows, and some of the most beloved classics (Oklahoma!, My Fair Lady, Gypsy, Sweeney Todd, etc.) are based of SOMETHING. What difference does it make what the source is as long as the product is good?

WW11 - took the words right out of my fingertips.
So much of art, no matter the medium, is derived from or inspired by other sources. I find the concept of movie-based musicals to be completely natural for the times we live in.
Now, if-and-when we get musicals based on 'Reality TV', I might have to reconsider
Amen to wonderfulwizard, although it would be nice if the producers were a bit choosier about the source material they've been using lately.
And DG, I have three words for you: Idol the Musical.

Ok, get the guns
Wasn't there supposed to be a musical based on Trump's The Apprentice? I recall hearing that somewhere.
here it is:

In My Life was not based on an existing source, but look at how that turned out. The problem is lack of quality, not lack of originality.
There is nothing new under the sun, as they say
^ Exactly!
I would rather have ten Hairsprays than ten Brooklyns.

There's been two shows in recent years that have really captured my heart.
LIGHT IN THE PIAZZA, which was adapted from an older movie, and CAROLINE, OR CHANGE, which was original.
Ultimately, if I get engaged, I'm not overly concerned as to the genesis.
I think the discomfort people generally have with the adaptation of a film to a Broadway musical -- as opposed to a novel or a memoir to a Broadway musical -- is the fact that one expects a higher caliber of art/entertainment to come from a Broadway musical than from a movie.
BUT, so-so movies, with the right creative team, have proven to be turned into fantastic, successful and entertaining Broadway musicals.
Though I do think that you need to separate people's resistance toward movies being adapted into musicals from that of just any source material being adapted into a musical. It's a much more specific trepidation than that.
Come again, Foster?

Amen, and amen to WW11.
Yes, it's about quality. I do want to see more books being made into plays but variety is good. All that matters to me is that the show is a good, entertaining one. I get tired of revivals going around and around. It only bugs me though because of our lack of options here in SF.
You want more variety? Go to Toronto. They have a lot of shows from many different sources. That is what I had to do. Also remember there are plenty of off-broadway shows you can check out that are more original.
The Fringe Festival goes on all over the world. It is amateur at times but a lot of variety there too.
I am not against movies being made into shows per si. I do realize that almost every broadway show out there has some source material or another. I just wish that they turned good movies into musicals. I just feel that for the most part a lot of the movies turned musicals are the ones that I would find in the 2.99 bin at the local car wash.
That is not to say that the worst movies cannot become good shows. I didn't like the original harspray movie but it made a great show.
I just don't understand some of the movies being turned into musicals. Legally Blonde is a good example. When I saw it I kept saying to myself" i don't know why this is a broadway show." I find the movie ok I can take it or leave it and have nothing against it. But, during intermission I was talking to a girl sitting next to me who had seen the show a couple of times before. She said that they had to make it into a broadway show because it has the strong mesage of don't judge a book by its cover.
That got me to stop and think and realize that this is not the only show on broadway with this message. All the popular shows for young teen girls have this message. Hairspray and wicked are both good examples of this message. Do we really need yet another one.
I was disguested by th3e show because it showed the typical valley girl making young girls think that the ywant to be like elle woods and it is okay to be that way.
But, I degress. I feel that there can be better movies being made into shwos.
Not that I don't like it... but we need some new original ideas!
Almost Famous would be great.
