Heather WAS Aida. Period. Thank you and good night. She embodied her and WAS her every time I saw it.
But relative to Toni and what I've heard of Michelle, Deborah was definitely above par.

"Deborah was definitely above par."
I saw both Heather and Deborah...and though she was no Heather she kicked butt.

The sad thing is my mom, who is not a big Broadway fan AT ALL would have LOVED to see AIDA, because she's so in love with the whole ancient-egypt thing....
if only I knew before...

Posted: 12/23/04 at 10:56pmI'm really sorry I missed Heather too. And I know this has been discussed on a couple of other threads, but did any of you see the Kennedy Center Honors on TV Tuesday night? Elton John was one of the honorees, and the whole evening (at least as televised) ended with Heather Headley singing "Your Song" to him very beautifully and with heartfelt emotion. She changed the words in a couple of places, ending with something like "how wonderful my life's been since you're in the world." He was definitely tearing up as she sang it.

I thoroughly enjoyed it. Saw it twice. The matinee was ghastly, though. :0 But the night show... *dies* 'Twas tres tres tres good.
My dad even liked it, and he hates musicals. It definately deserved a longer run. *le sigh*

The whole show was much better than I expected, with several outstanding musical performances and mostly good speeches. I can't watch most awards shows, which I find cringe-inducing, but this one was a real exception.

Eponine - my dad sleeps through most musicals, but he really enjoyed AIDA. I always figured that said at least SOMETHING for it. When did you see it? Not the matinee and evening show on the same day, right?
I definitely will, Chloe. My brother told me Heather sang, and I was so angry for not watching.

My dad can sleep through anything. We were watching an Xmas movie tonight w/Chevy Chase in it, and it was TOTALLY HILARIOUS, and he fell asleep. And we went to NYC this year, and he fell asleep during Rent (I can understand mabye boredom, but SLEEP? But its so friggin LOUD!). But he didn't fall asleep during Aida. I don't know if that's credit to the play, or if that says something about my dad... lol. Let's credit it to the play. :P
Ha, no I didn't see the matinee and evening show the same day (though, honestly, I can sit through anything decent at least twice in a row...). I saw the matinee on a Wednesday afternoon and the evening show on Friday night (yes, of the same week... its a long story). Part of the matinee's problem was that they didn't block all the light properly, so theater was not very dark at all. Some of the fighting seemed really, really cheesy and tacky in the light... actually, a lot of things seemed cheesy and tacky in the light. And the understudy (the Destiny's Child singer, Michelle something or other, was the lead at the time and she only did evening shows) reached her peak by the time she first met Radames and then hit a very large plateau (in other words, she got really good really fast but never got any better... she never wowed us, either). She also made it difficult for me to listen to Heather on the CD I bought (Can you believe it? After seeing the matinee and thinking that the understudy sounded the way Aida was supposed to, I thought Heather was awful? After hearing Michelle Whatserface, I ADORED Heather's voice, not because it was a break from Michelle's awful screeching or anything, but because Michelle sang it the way it was supposed to be sung, as did Heather, and I was able to realize that the understudy's way was not the best way at all... I don't know if that makes ANY sense at all. All I know is that when I first bought the CD, I couldn't listen to a song with Aida in it because Heather was so horrid, and then after I came back from seeing Michelle, Heather's voice was absolutely breathtakingly awesome). AND the understudy's hairdo looked very odd from the top of the balcony (it was braided... I've seen people with hair like that up-close, and its fine, but it was distracting from the nose-bleed section). So it was so-so at best. It was very disappointing. It made me avoid matinees like the plague, until circumstances forced me to settle for the Rent matinee (which was absolutely fantastic beyond description). But then the night show was pitch black, there was a large audience waiting to enjoy it (though the people behind me were incredibly obnoxious... and they also gave me my first experience of being robbed in NYC). Michelle Watsername was a little weak in the beginning, but got better and better and was amazing at the end of the first act and beginning of the second act. She also allowed me to appreciate Heather's gorgeous voice. The fighting didn't seem as cheesy in the dark. And I left it feeling hyper (you know a movie/show is good when you leave it feeling hyper!
)!
I bought a shirt, and its all Egyptian and it says Aida, and I often have people ask me if that's a place in Egypt. *giggles*
