Aida Closing

Posted: 5/5/04 at 8:30pmI wonder why Aida is closing in September instead of, like 42 nd Stree ,after New Years. The Palace probably has a new tenant lined up is my guess.

Yep, it's La Cage aux Folles (did I spell that wrong?). Check the other million threads on this topic (ok, 3

Posted: 5/5/04 at 9:16pmI didn't like Simone very much. Paulette Ivory was the only Aida I saw who really blew me away. But then again Simone was amazing compared to dear Ms. Braxton...

Melanie Griffith is amazing compared to Toni Braxton.

I didn't like SimoneSuperstar at all the first time I saw it.
I actually didn't mind Toni that much. I actually preferred some of the songs in her key, if only because it helped ground the character a little more. (It's hard for me to sympathize for a tortured woman if she's belting it out to the balcony.) Was she a great actress or singer? Not really. But I could feel for her character's plight a lot more.

Please refer to the pasted link. In the article - Thomas Schumacher, president of Disney Theatrical Productions - mentions why he's closing the show in September. It apparently has more to do with how slow bway business is during that time than it does La Cage moving into the Palace.

As for SimoneSuperStar - I truly enjoyed her as AIDA. IMHO, she wasn't as 'vocally impressive' as Paulette Ivory, but her vocals were definitely strong and her acting was a he!l of a lot better than Paulette's.

Posted: 5/5/04 at 11:49pmWhen did this Paulette woman play the role? Was she the main lead (or whatever it's called) on Broadway? I actually didn't know of anyone else beside Heather, Simone, Michelle, Toni, Deborah and their alternate. Paulette must have been good with all the lovin' on this thread, I'm sorry I missed her.

Posted: 5/6/04 at 9:48amPaulette Ivory was AIDA in the touring show - unfortunately she never made it to broadway. There were talks about it, but I guess they decided to go the R&B star route instead of placing a full-time AIDA in the role.
