"Ain't Too Proud" at the Kennedy Center

As you can see from the above article (link below in case the article disappears), the show broke the Kennedy Center box office record last week, the run's last. Having seen it there this past Saturday night, I'm not surprised at all. It's pure entertainment, though there is some serious pathos in parts of the book, which is based on Otis Williams book "The Temptations." The cast, musicians and choreography were sensational.

There's a rumored NY opening next spring after runs in LA and Toronto, and I hope it does get to Broadway. Peter Marks of the WAPO thinks it's ready now and it's hard to disagree, though there's almost always room for a show to improve during this stage of the game, I'd suspect. The audience sure loved it. I get to see quite a few shows in DC and this one got about as rapturous response as I've seen in that venue.

Is the show very big? I wonder if it will go into a big musical house (similar size to the Imperial, Marquis, etc.) or try to go into a smaller venue (like the John Golden or Walter Kerr)"

That's a great question. No, I wouldn't describe the show as "very big". There are a few times where there are more than 5-7 people on stage at a time, but even those scenes aren't what I'd call "big" scenes. The dancing is pretty much limited to the steps of the Temptations during their numbers (and it's fantastic).

For the sake of the show, I truly hope they don't put it in a theater that has a capacity of more than 1200.
