Alan Bennett Anecdote

Alan Bennett Anecdote
Playwright Alan Bennet's 2009 diary recalls a conversation with his lover, Rupert Thomas.
They had just watched a TV adaption of Emily Bronte's Yorkshire melodrama, 'Wuthering Heights'.

Bennett; Rupert turned to me as it finished and says 'Alan, your rather a lot like Heathcliff'
Bennett: 'Me! Really!
Thomas: 'Yeah! Difficult, Stuborn, Northern and a c***!'

Domestic bliss is recorded in the Bennett household.

Alan Bennett Anecdote

My favourite Bennett anecdote:

He and Russell Harty (camp chat show host and a lovely), used to travel to London each Monday, then commute north again each Friday sharing a car.

One day Bennett says to Harty on their long drive, "Let's play a game, to beguile the hours: let's have a competition try to decide which star's underpants we would least like to put on our heads."

Without a moment's pause, Harty replies, "Colin Welland."

"Damn!" says Bennett. "You've won already!"
