Hey Everyone!
I'm at Broadway Theatre Project, and today we got to watch Frank Wildhorn's new musical Alice be workshopped. I unfortunately wasn't chosen to be a part of the workshop, but it was pretty awesome to watch fellow students participate as well as Brandi Burkhardt. The four numbers we got to watch were really awesome, very different. The musical is not at all what one would expect, with a hip hop number and salsa-ish number. Of course this was just a workshop, but it was amazing.

Can you go into greater detail about the numbers? Was Brandi playing Alice as an adult? More info!
Very interested in this project.

Come on guys, really?!?! Frank is an amazing writer and he is ENGAGED to Brandi and has the right to write songs for the woman he loves! If you were engaged to him you know damn well you would want him to write a part in his show for you!
Anyway, yes, Brandi was singing Alice, but it is like a 6th Generation Alice, older and with a daughter named Chloe. It's sorta of our secret, since the first read thru and workshop was here, but it's going to be awesome so definately look for it on Broadway within the next year or two.

This is an adaotation of "Alice in Wonderland" the title is not set in stone, but I think it's clever because in this story Alice ISN'T in Wonderland. Wonderland is in trouble and so this 6th-ish generation Alice has to save the day. There are way more plot complications that spice it up, but it's still in the works and it's our secret

I love Wildhorn and hope this one goes far. I wish he would pick strong collaborators because he has the potential to write another big hit.

I think you're underestimating this musical. I mean, you can't deny that the music to Jekyll and Hyde (book and/or lyrics set aside) is beautiful! He's taking risks and changing things up so that the Mad Hatter is a Jazzy Diva female who wants to take over Wonderland and the Cheshire Cat is from the hood but set to latino music and the catapillar number (which is my favorite!) has about 20 people being the legs of the catapillar (plus they're all high on opium yay!) It's really neat.
So stop being jealous that these opportunities were opened to us and that you don't have to ability to CREATE A FRICKEN melody. k? There's no need to bash the people who create the music that gives actors jobs. It's hard enough on us as it is! :P
I'm not saying the the show will be a smash on Broadway, but at least give it a chance.

Milliemarch and galindagirl2, how exactly how are you affiliated with this project?

Posted: 7/22/07 at 10:12ammilliemarch, I don't mean to be disrespectful, but if this workshop is "sorta of our secret" as you put it, why open a thread about it on a public discussion board?

Posted: 7/23/07 at 4:04pmWe are both afffiliated because the first workshop was done here at Broadway Theatre Project with the apprentices participating in the cast. It's not a secret in the fact that no one can know about it, it's just our "secret" as in we're the only people who have seen it so far...

wow, galinda, wow. That sounds like a train wreck. What the heck is he thinking? what about it says "good idea".
Alice in Wonderland does not need an urbanization/overthrown by major character type of musical. It doesn't fit.
And, while yes, his scores are beautiful, the score for "Carrie" and "In My Life" were as well, and we all saw how those turned out.
