Why did they take this song out? I thought it was one of the best new pieces in the little mermaid demo...
I wonder if they thought it was too similar to I Want the Good Times Back? Or that it was lyrically too contradictory to that piece?
Too bad they couldn't have found a way to either work it into the show, or short of that, release Sherri Renee Scott singing it... I would love to hear her take on the piece!

I want the Goodtimes Back replaced it.
Sherie Rene Scott talked about this in a recent interview with the ATW Downstage Center podcast series.
She felt that both "All Good Things Must End" and "Wasting Away," two songs for Ursula that were in the show during the workshop phase of production, were not "appropriate" as she saw the character.
She convinced the creative team to cut them both and instead write a new number specifically around her interpretation of the role, which became "I Want The Good Times Back."
I thought this thread was gonna be about Finland.

I agree with your question...
And hmph...I think All Good Things Must End is WAY better than "I Want the Good Times Back", but to each his own. As much as I love Sherie, I think she shot herself in the foot with that one.

Dang both of those songs were much better than the new one. Wasted Away was particularly good.
Since when do the creators listen to an actress?
I thought this thread was about the show closing, but then I realized it said "good" things.

I just listened to that part of the interview, so it was basically her fault that the songs were cut?
I personally think "Wasting Away" and "All Good Things Must End" are better songs than "I Want The Good Times Back." The only problem I have with "All Good Things" is the fact that it may be too modern for the time period of the show.
I wonder where "All Good Things Must End" would have been placed in the show?
It seems what was in the demo was a different show than it is now. "Beyond My Wildest Dreams" was a solo for Ariel, "If Only" was a duet between Ariel and Eric, Sebastian's part in "If Only" was a reprise, the "Poor Unfortunate Souls Reprise" was different, etc
I think All Good Things would have been right when Ursula took Ariel back to the Sea after failing to get her kiss.
You're right. Both songs were much better. Esp. AGT.
Where can I listen to the interview?
I thought this thread was going to be about the fact that Little Mermaid was up at TKTS on Tuesday. Is it now doomed to Tarzan status?
I thought this thread was about MERMAID closing. Crap.
So how does one read/hear these cut songs?
All Good Things Must End is ok, but not as catchy as I Want the Good Times Back. But Wasting Away is just tedious. It takes a minimal one-liner from the film and stretches it out into a song, repeating the same joke over and over again (about how skinny she is, which is ironic, but totally irrelevent). Even the film only hints at the gag once and it's not like it's hilarious or anything. It simply did not call out to be musicalized, especially in such an uncreative manner.
I think they made the right choice.

:sighs:
Thank you, degrassifan, I am currently having a listen. Now I feel apart of the conversation.

So, what do you think of the songs?
Well, let me state first, I worship Sherie, but I really like hearing these songs by Emily. She does do a great Ursula.
I like both of these song but absolutely agree with earlier post that they are not needed, plus I Want the Good Times back is my favorite number in the show.
THE LITTLE MERMAID has been popping up on TKTS the last couple of weeks, I think that's the fastest a DISNEY show has shown up there, even TARZAN waited longer.
What's up with that?

Curtain- its complete and utter garbage/ trash- worse than TARZAN imho

I want the Good Times Back is not even close to the quality of those other two songs. Plus the other songs are much more realistic for the character of Ursula to sing.
IMO it can't be "complete and utter garbage" because it has Sheri in it, doing a couple great songs.
When I saw it I had extremely low expectations because of all the posts on here, and I was surprised that it was not that awful. It needs some work, but it was an enjoyable evening for me.
I have been a fan of the music and movie since high school, so I have a soft spot in my heart for TLM.

Forget about the false rumors that the show is closing, and let's think about Finland...
The country where I quite want to be
