I just listened to the clip again and paid more attention to the actual singing and phrasing of Emmy Rossum. As someone posted earlier, I don't know if it's an audition piece or a test run, but being a trained tenor, she slid into most of her notes in that "poppy" way as my voice teacher would call it.
I would hope that being she's playing an opera singer, that the rest of her musical performance doesn't entail that. I know people are going to say, "You're just judging by that clip", and I will say that for 16-years old, she did far superior than most girl sopranos I went to high school with back in the 90s, and tried to have sing that duet with me.
She did fine, I just caught that she was sliding... my little observation.

I haven't heard her yet...I can't believe a 16-year-old kid is doing those songs!
How unbelievably pretty is that girl, too? Wow, she's just beautiful.

She's 18 years old now! But I don't know how old she was when she filmed the movie/recorded those songs.
I think she'll be just fine (I already like her more than the white devil herself, Sarah Brightman)

Sarah Brightman frightened me when I was a child!! I believe I remember a critic's quote saying she sounded like Minnie Mouse on Quaaludes!! I still find that one priceless!!

Yeah, the only reason Brightman got into the show was probably due to one small thing:
She was boning ALW

sort of OT, but i'm gonna go for it.
i saw "phantom" in 1993 on the first tour with Tracey Shayne in minneapolis and london in 1994 with Claire Moore. I honestly don't remember Tracey's performance, but Claire's stands out to me. Her voice is amazing.
and on a completely different note, my parents attended the wedding of a friend's daughter, and she's a cellist in nyc, and one of her friends played 'christine' in "phantom" and she sang 'AIAOY'. my mom tried talking to her, and my mom said she was a real b**** to her. but my mom learned from her friend (the bride's mom), that alw fired her from the show!!

i saw it london right after she took over for LuPone (another one of my divas). i was so blown away by her power!!!

La LuPone was replaced in "Sunset" because of the b.o. bonanza that Glenn CloseNeedsToGetFurtherAway was bringing to the L.A. production. Patti had a contract with ALW that she would open the show in London and take it to New York. When ALW told Glenn she was going to B'way, he offered Patti the L.A. run, and she declined. I think the way she was treated was extremely rude. I read RUG made it extremely difficult for her. She now has a "pool that ALW paid for". Sarah Brightless was quoted as saying, "If she {Patti} can't take the politics, get out of the business".
ALW also did the same thing to Faye Dunaway, who was going to go into the L.A. run after Glenn. She also got a monetary recompense, and the show never went on in L.A. after Glenn.
And then Betty replaced LuPone in London, and then Glenn Close in NYC, and Elaine Paige, Rita Moreno, and Petula Clark finished out London.

Posted: 9/29/04 at 7:05pmi think she sounded very weak in the recording. she sounds nothing like an opera star should..but as it's been pointed out it might just be an audition tape. Updated On: 9/29/04 at 07:05 PM

Posted: 9/29/04 at 7:07pmBuckleyfan - I'm just curious about something. Am I really reading correctly that you 'still think it's priceless' that a critic made the Minnie Mouse remark about Ms. Brightman, but that the same comment about Ms. Buckley is 'so cruel'? And mind you, I'm not commenting on either performer, just your apparent different evaluations of the remark.

Truth be told, I just thought the line the critic used to describe Sarah Brightman was funny... plain and simple. Nothing behind it on my end. Her voice has greatly improved with age and with study. Onto my Diva:
I don't know if Rathnait was trying to make a jab at Ms. Buckley's expense, and if so that's her business, but I never read any reviews that stated anything negative about Ms. Buckley's performance in "Sunset".

Posted: 9/29/04 at 7:22pmI'm not making a "stab." It actually happened. I hadn't heard it said about Brightman, and when you brought it up, it reminded me of the Buckley incident.

Posted: 9/29/04 at 7:35pmyou know I wasn't impressed by that recording either. I'm hoping that the show is better than that, b/c right now I'm worried. Seriously from that recording I could sing circles around Emmy Rossum. She is beautiful though. She seems a little young for me. I know that the part is young, but the fact that she'd be considered illegal for Patrick WIlson to date (during the shooot) creeps me out a little bit. We'll see ... I'm hoping for the best.
