Our Community Theater group is gonna put on All Shook Up this summer. And was wondering if anybody knew what significant changes were made from the broadway version to the one schools/communities do now?
And how do the Lorraine and her change if you can't find black women to play the roles?
Any help would be amazing?
Where is your community theater? I want to see the show again.
The Broadway version opens with "Jailhouse Rock" and Chad has spend the weekend in jail for exciting the towns women. Love Me Tender is moved from the opening number to later in Act I as a "duet" with Chad and Natalie. Natalie sings it to Chad and Chad to Miss Sandra.
Devil in Disguise is moved from Act I to Act II. It now involves Matilda dreaming about chasing Chad out of her town as opposed to her warning Dean to stay away from him.
If you're unable to find an African-American actress for Lorraine/Sylvia they can be played as white women from the "wrong" side of the tracks.
Thank you so much. My community theater is in west virginia and were not that great so i wouldnt come see us lol ... but im hoping mow its under new direction it will get better!
if anyone would like to go into detail about this show becasue i need all the info on everything to make it good PM me ur aim and we can chat
If anything... the homosexual/gay implications (between Natalie's male alter-ego and Chad) will be removed. I don't think high schools are ready to play around with that subtext.
no i was watching clips from high school productions and that is pretty much still in there
Broadway version opened with Love Me Tender, and Jailhouse Rock did not appear until halfway through Act II when Chad is arrested by Sheriff Earl. On tour, Jailhouse Rock opens the show for no tangible reason other than it is a widely known number and the show was trying to be more like Grease. Love Me Tender is sung by Natalie as she is changing into Ed onstage. Devil in Disguise was first sung by Mayor Matilda and the church ladies, and then on tour involved the mayor imaging Chad clones dancing around her and engaged in an electric guitar duel. I hope they are licensing the Broadway version, but I doubt it.
I need a regional production in NYC, or even Philly!!
In MD, there's also a regional production this summer! It's a professional dinner theatre group. Seems like a fun show. I know like 1/2 the cast.
The tour version is the one that's being licensed. I saw the show in March in Long Beach, CA and the show opened with "Jailhouse Rock". And I think the change is a good one. A show of this nature should open with a rousing number and not a ballad.
im so excited to do this show ... i hope we get a good turn out for auditions .... not so much worried about girls its the guys that never have a turnout ... i think they think theyre all too macho ... but im straight and LOVE theater!
Does anyone have pictures of the set design ... I kinda liked the broadway version but am open to anykind ... I looked on the internet but cant find any good ones son anyone please help i want this show to be perfect i want theater to interest this town again like it use to be!

The sets from that site are the National tour sets and costumes, The tour sets and costumes were the broadway sets, minus Ms. Sandra's trailer.

Correction: the TOUR version opens that way. Misto is correct in the order. As for the African-American thing, I believe it's played as a class issue when there aren't enough African Americans. Like a how could the mayor's son date the daughter of a honky-tonk owner type of thing.
I miss this show. Two and a half YEARS. Wow.
