Alley Envy?

Yesterday, I first noticed the sign at the 46th St entrance to the Marriott Marquis pass-through has a sign "James M Nederlader Alley." Of course this is across from Shubert Alley which goes from 45th to 44th.

Jealous much, Nederlanders? I wouldn't be surprised it if had been there for years - or was it named after his death? (I'm also confused between Jameses and Jimmies)

...and from what I recall of its history, the Shubert brothers just started using that segment of the block and sorta' got squatters rights to the alley - so that would also mean that neither the Shuberts nor the Nederlanders actually own the passageways they've named.

The Shuberts own Shubert Alley. Like other privately-owned spaces open to the public, it's blocked-off once a year.

Thanks! I had remembered the recent death, and figured that it was named at the time. A bit curious that the sign is only on 46th St but not 45th.

...and yeah, I just checked "The Boys from Syracuse" (thank you, Amazon "search inside" function) and see that the Shuberts bought the property including the alley in 1913.

I think I was confused because I recall that there was something extra-legal - about the way that they parked there originally (and still keep the spots) or, perhaps, that the city maintains it as a public thoroughfare although it's not city owned? In any case something about it that was an example of the Shubert cojones in dealing with the city.
