My 14-year-old daughter saw "Altar Boyz" last Wednesday (it was my second visit) and hasn't shut up about it since. She wants to make it an annual thing in conjunction with Kids Night on Broadway, but she just wants to make sure it will still be there.
Am I right in assuming that it is one of the more popular Off-Broadway shows and is in no danger of closing in the forseeable future?

Posted: 2/5/07 at 10:42amI realize that, but was trying to gauge the popularity level...it seems to have a VERY devoted following and just wondered if that would be enough to keep in afloat for years on end like Blue Man Group and I Love you, You're Perfect, Now Change.

A devoted following is so different from a tourist pleaser. Take Hedwig for instance. That show had the most devoted following I ever saw. Yet, the show constantly teetered on closing until it finally did after a two year run. It was only the devotion of the producers that kept it afloat while losing money.
Altar Boyz has somewhat of a devoted following, but it hasn't made any money yet either.
The other two shows are tops on every travel agent's short list. Every day the buses roll up to "I Love You, You're Perfect....." and they fill the theater. This is not a devoted following, but tourists who have never seen the show before.
So - there's a big difference between cult following and tourist pleaser.

Thanks for the dividing line--it's true, especially since I was a huge Hedwig fan. Maybe those weren't the two greatest shows to bring up, but from the online community my daughter and I have seen, Altar Boys seems to veer more to the devoted following side.
I get the money issue though--Altar Boyz is ALWAYS at TKTS. But then again, almost everything is.
