hey did anyone see sunday night's performance with kevin kern doing matthew's role? i'm curious to know how his performance went and how it compares to scott porter.

An understudy went on and I missed it!?!? CRAP! I'd love to know how he did if anyone saw it.

Ooh, I love Kevin Kern -- he was easily the Marius in Les Miz I ever saw!

Yep, he was the understudy for a while, then he was the final Marius when the show closed. Who's the other Marius in Altar Boyz?

He understudied Marius for a few years, then (as someone said) he was the last Marius on Broadway.

i think david josefsberg who plays "Abraham" in altar boyz played marius. that's him in cattlecall's icon. thanks for the link lizzie! i saw les miz a while ago but he looked like an awesome marius.

...but i guess no one here saw him last night

Juliet, if you want to get some of the story of Kevin Kern going on, you can read Daniel Torres' journal on danieltorres.net. Apparently the fire alarm went on during the beginning of the performance and everyone had to be evacuated.

And yes, David Josefsberg did play Marius on Broadway. He was the understudy, but I believe he went on in the role a few times.

He was also on tour around 1995 as (I think) Claquesous or Babet and understudy Marius.

*spoilers (please be warned)*

ahh i just saw kevin kern as matthew!! he was really good! at first i just couldn't imagine anyone else doing scott porter's role but he was very charismatic though i know he must be nervous. i loved his acting in "genesis of the altar boyz according to mark" it was soo seductive! lol "did you do something to your hair? well it looks reeeally good" hahaha i almost cried :) he's a really good dancer and loosened up towards the end. i can tell he was way more comfortable when altar boyz remix came around. boy could he rotate those hips! lol okay enough of that..

the girl he picked off the audience was so perfect. she was a teenager there with her parents, braces and all! lol she kept wanting to stand up and leave and i think kevin may have been a little more distant with her than when i watched scott serenade a girl but it was pretty charming anyhow. :)

there's some songs i forgot about last time that were HILARIOUS like the "stand up" song and abe's "family" low note. awww abe...what a guy. i missed luke's hat again and the lady who caught it said it was signed! lol did any of you guys ever catch his hat? cattlecall were you there today? i think "luke" and "mark" came out to collect donations but i didnt see anyone else like daniel torres (bummer) but i said hi to tyler and gave my lunch money for charity :)

anyone else see kevin today? i wonder if he'll continue to do the role for awhile...

Hey Juliet. I DID see the show today and I thought Kevin did an amazing job!! Usually I have a hard time sitting through understudy performances because I spend most of the time worrying that they'll forget their lines or screw up in one way or another -- but Kevin seemed so confident on stage that I thankfully didn't have to worry for too long. Phew!

I too thought Kevin's acting during "The Genesis of..." was pretty damn funny and I also really enjoyed his singing voice throughout the show. His voice is a bit huskier than Scott Porter's but I thought it worked really well with the songs and added an interesting spin to a few of them. He also seemed to fit in really well with the rest of the cast, which was a nice thing to see.

Overall, I think he did a great job and I actually wouldn't mind seeing him again the next time I see the show!

P.S. This post would've been a lot lengthier and more detailed if I didn't accidentally delete my original one by hitting the 'back' button on my browser.

Thanks for the reviews about Kevin. Do you know if he'll be on any more days this week? I'd love to check him out though I can't imagine I could like him more than I like Scott! :)

FYI, Scott Nevins mentioned at Therapy on Monday that the Altar Boyz were going to be his guests in a few weeks! YAY!!

Anyway, I too am glad everyone enjoyed his performance. I love it when understudies go out there and put on a fantastic show. I don't know why, but it makes me proud of them. Yeh, I'm wierd.

oh!!!! i would kill to hear that! i LOVE Kevin. He was my favorite Marius (well...he's the only marius i saw, but still!)!

I'm so happy that he did well. He's such a sweet (and talented) man!
