Has anyone watched the Altar Boyz "rehearsal" video on the homepage of Broadway.com yet? I really didn't have much interest in the show (still trying to forget my secret Backstreet Boys obsession in high school) but the video is HYSTERICAL and kind of got me intrigued. (Not to mention there are a few nice shots of Andy Karl's arms--yum.)
It's really funny when the run up to the garbage can on the street. I'm wondering if the footage of them sitting around and talking in the video is ad-libbed or if most of what is in the video is in the show...anyone know?

I was wondering why no one had mentioned the video before!! I JUST found out about it a couple of minutes ago and am downloading it right now (damn dial-up connection). The 10 seconds I've already seen of it though does make me very excited to be able to view the rest of it!!
Only 5 more day till first preview!!

Posted: 2/10/05 at 2:01amI agree, the video doesn't seem like the best commercial. I saw it in the festival last summer but Broadway.com's poorly-put together video makes the show seem completely unfunny. Don't let this dampen your desire to go to the show-it's a great show-don't miss it.

Posted: 2/10/05 at 2:20amI saw the show when it played the NYMF and it was hysterical! I think the video on broadway.com is funny but not representative of how good the show really is.

They seem to be aiming for creative advertising. It was alright. I think I laughed at it because I've seen the show and understand what's going on.
Only the songs in the video that they perform in rehearsals are in the show. That dialogue was not in the show from what I can recall.
Definitely check it out. I found the show to be very entertaining, though I don't care much for the guy that's playing Matthew yet. I'd rather see him live before I say anything too judgmental though.

Posted: 2/10/05 at 9:05amI'm used to the fact that the posters on this site are generally, shall we say, slow on the uptake. It takes alot of brain space to devote your life to all things Wicked and Idina Mentzel, but what about this *SPOOF* got past you all? It's hysterical and I'm pretty certain, it's supposed to be. What's to "get". I haven't seen the show, but if this is true.. "I think the video on broadway.com is funny but not representative of how good the show really is", then let's face it, this thing is going to be a monster hit. Updated On: 2/10/05 at 09:05 AM

Al. Al. Al.
You get triple word score for managing to insult just about everyone who posts here. I'll try and tough it out and not take it to heart. I have seen the show and I found the video to be mildly entertaining. You're right, there's not much to "get" but at the same time, for someone that hasn't seen the show nor is theater savvy (which I know you are Al) - and I am talking Joe Blow in Podunk, LA - this video won't do much to sell the show. It's a fun departure from the standard rehearsal videos we get to see and would be a GREAT companion to a rehearsal video, or even after the show opens as a fun follow up. It'a a bit "fan-ny" and "cute". Not that its Broadway.com's job to create a commercial for Altar Boyz.
But Al, you, of all people can't criticize people for not liking the video and then go on to slam them citing that they are slow on the uptake. Some, perhaps just didn't care for it. I have seen you post on numerous thread that based on brief clips and so on that YOU have lost all hope for a production and can't believe how some people would get excited. Surely you wouldn't take that right away from everyone else. You're a big boy :)
Altar Boyz, regardless of any video, will most likely be a huge success either way.

Posted: 2/10/05 at 9:28amOh Jeff, Jeff, Jeff, you are always there to keep my wayward behind in line :). But surely, you must agree, how *lost* most, not ALL, of the posters are, when it comes to sarcasm, adult humour, etc...and now and again, when it's something this obvious, I can't take it. You must understand my frustration. And again, you're right, I haven't seen the show but.. the video most definitely did NOT turn me off, or confuse me in any way. You know I love ya Jeff.

What exactly is this show about?

Al,
FYI, I didn't mean that I didn't get it as in I didn't understand the parody. I just thought it was unfunny, and didn't get what the hype is all about.
In regard to your other comment, I've seen two shows in the past two weeks that are better than Wicked, so I guess I'm expanding my brain cells a bit.

"And then I knew...that Jesus just called us on our cell phone."
How is that not hysterical?

Al,
What about this video is ACTUALLY funny? I get what they are trying to do, but everything is overdone. It feels like it's trying to be a "waiting for guffman" for boybands, and well-broadway.com is clearly no chris guest. Let's be honest here.
and someone else raised a valid point-is this actually a commercial that broadway.com produced?-do they get a cut of ticket sales that go through the brokering part of their site? I don't know many people that would do coverage like this for free.

TheGa, it's fine you don't have to think it's funny, I guess it's just my type of humor.
It does seem like it's been done before (2ge+her, anyone?). But it's still funny, at least in my eyes.

I saw this at NYMF and found it fun, if a little too long to sustain its premise. I wasn't necessarily planning to see it again, but this video is actually tempting me. (Though I have a feeling I will miss Cheyenne.)
I found the bits in the video in front of the Helen Hayes Theater and the trashcan particularly amusing, but perhaps they don't work as well if you haven't seen the show.

I never got to see this during NYMF since it was sold out...the video looks pretty funny, I'll probably check it out.
But they're no Faith +1 :)

I have no doubt that the show is going to be a moster hit. And rightly so - it was hysterical. What I meant by "not being representative" of the show was that I don't know if everyone understands that what is on that video is not in fact any part of the actual staged show other than the rehearsal/song bits.
I think the bww.com spoof was very Conan O'Brien (and that's a great thing to me) but that some posters might not be into that.
