Not a fan. It's a great score and I play the CD often, but I just can't hack sitting through it in the theatre for much the same reason that I can't sit through Mamma Mia - the 'plot' and tired jokes are cack. Good songs and nifty dancing, but I found it a loooong three hours...

How can you NOT like "Anything Goes"??? With that brilliant score and all them tapping chorines?

I actually like it quite a bit. I first saw it on tour with a less than stellar cast [although Rip Taylor totally rocked as Moonface Martin], but I still enjoyed the show as a whole. Never did get to see the LuPone production, but the London production with Sally Ann Triplett and John Barrowman was extraordinary.

I Love it! I did in when I was in college (don't ask how long ago that was)..The songs are catchy and fun..the plot is fluffy but cute.. I saw the revival , which I didn't like as well as the 60's version either..

"Which is why I don't understand the argument against Wicked. Not attempting a thread jack, but is it really much different in genre?"

Anything Goes isn't pretentious. Wicked is. That's the short answer :)

A lot of people have obviously liked Anything Goes over the years. It's just about the only Cole Porter show, other than Kiss Me Kate, that is revived or revised. It's also the only show where Patti LuPone fit the character: a brazen hussy.

I'd like to see the show one day with the complete original score.

A timeless and always enjoyable show. As a "tired businessman," I saw it on my own in London in 1990 and then this summer I took my daughter out to Long Island to see it at the Bayway Arts Center. And just before we saw The Drowsy Chaperone in April, we drove out to a Jewish temple in Wantagh to see Girl Crazy, and a few weeks later we saw Let's Face It at Musicals Tonight. So now we can relate to Man in Chair as he recalls a time when "people sat in darkened theatres," praying for Gershwin or Porter to deliver "a story and a few songs to take me away."

Not sure I understand the thread title. Why would you think you are the only one who likes it? I've never noticed an abundance of I HATE ANYTHING GOES threads on the boards. Seriously, I'm totally not picking on you, but did I miss something?

For the record, I adore this show, and all of those great, Broadway-baby-toe-tappin' musicals in general. I saw it in 1988 at the Vivian Beaumont and it remains one of my most enjoyable theater-going experiences.

I much prefer the 1962 Off-Broadway version the best. It moves a lot quicker too plus I like the character of Bonnie over Erma and I feel that in general the characters are developed just a bit more. First time I did this show it was directed by John Milne, Beth Leavel's husband.

They did the show in London in 1935-35 with a star of the Follies Bergiere playing Reno. THAT production must have been pretty interesting.

I LOVE anything goes! My school did it for the show last year and it was SOOO much fun :) unlike Fiddler, (which we did the year before last and which I really didnt looove until we did it and I got attached to it), I loved anything goes from the very beginning. I just think its so clever and funny and the songs are fantastic. It IS in MAJOR need of a new revival and cast recording though haha. And... I have this huge obsession with the idea of Idina doing Reno.. yeah :) and um.. maybe laura benanti doing Hope? ooh yes, that would be beyond amazing

I don't need a life that's normal. That's way too far away. But something next to normal would be okay. Something next to normal is what I'd like to try. Close enough to normal to get by.

Although, snl89, I don't agree with your casting, i do agree that the show is ready for a revival soon - maybe within the next 5 to 7 years.

My pick for Reno, however, would be Carolee Carmello, although she may be a little old for the role.

and although it'd be risky casting a broadway revival, I have this strange desire to see Megan Mullaly do this role.

I saw it a few years ago in TR Drury lane, and it felt like the longest three hours of my life. However, I'd say I'd like it now, my tastes have broadened now so I can enjoy shows which would have bored my eyes out four or five years ago. It's just my age.

The rain we knew is a thing of the past -
deep-delving, dark, deliberate you would say
browsing on spire and bogland; but today
our sky-blue slates are steaming in the sun,
our yachts tinkling and dancing in the bay
like racehorses. We contemplate at last
shining windows, a future forbidden to no one.

The only bad things about the 80s revival were the anorexic chorus girls who looked nothing like 1930s people and the dreadful choreography by a ballet choreographer of limited talent. If I'd been the great Patti Lupone, I'd have asked, "what do you want in 'Blow Gabriel Blow,' my voice or those dreadful dances? You can have one or the other. I won't compete with trash."

Anybody see Stratford, Canada's production from a year or two ago? It was truly fantastic. One of the best shows I've seen on ANY stage ever.
