American Idol's Simon insults "La Cage aux Folles"

Whats up with Simon?
A contestant auditioned for American Idol.
He decided to sing a "yoddle"
and Simon comes and tells him:
That was a combination of a Rodeo and La Cage aux Folles!

What was that?

Simon is an anti Broadway.

You're right - that must be it - he's anti-Broadway.

He told someone last week maybe she would succeed if she provided the voices for Disney movies. He must be anti-Disney, too.

I think he was probably just using a random Broadway show to make a joke. There's no yodelling in La Cage, so I'm pretty sure there was no animosity towards the show or Broadway in general. Many times he has said (very nicely), "You've got a great voice, but you're more well-suited for Broadway." I think he said that about Clay Aiken at his first audition.

1. Simon is a "hater".
2. He was making a joke, in his usual vein of humor.
3. The guy was yodeling and he was ALSO a little ambiguous in terms of sexuality. Hence, Simon's observation.
4. I'm not condoning this- in fact, I found it rather distasteful, but you can't watch AI and expect not to see anything distasteful.
[title of show] on Broadway. it's time. believe.

I was watching last night, and if I remember correctly, I think that that guy was wearing a western-type shirt that was, I believe, bedazzled to within an inch of it's life. Not to mention his diva-drama-queen-like attitude. I'm pretty sure it was the image that prompted the La Cage remark.

I love that some of you have written "there's no yodeling in La Cage". Well, DUH!!!!! That was the rodeo part. I think is statement was more anti-gay men than anti-Bway. The La Cage part was the fact that I think Simon (and I agreed after he said it and you know we all laughe) the guy sounded as nuts as he would have looked in a dress.
Just my thought.

I don't know if he is necessarily. When Clay Aiken auditioned, he said something along the lines of, "If I was casting the Phantom of the Opera, you'd be my first choice." I don't think he's a complete Broadway fan, but he isn't against it.

I love this. If any one of these guys' witty gay friends had said the same thing, it would've just been laughed off...but if Simon says it, then the proverbial Shiite hits the fan...

Simon Cowell is not a 'hater', he's an honest man. Whoever tells these people they can sing wants shooting. If you build someone up that much, it's an awful long way to come crashing back down to reality. In England, they have pre-auditions for Pop Idol, only the very best and the very worst get to see the judges and be filmed. It's all about entertainment, and someone who is nice and lets the dross get through out of sympathy is not what these shows, or these auditionees need. For me, the ones who are at fault are the friends and family who just can't tell the truth!

As for the La Cage Aux Folles reference, has it occured to anyone that he may have been talking about the film, which predates the musical?

And for the last time, when he refers to someone as "too Broadway," it's not an insult - just a fact. American Idol is not a competition to find the next Broadway star.

The yodeling guy in question made Jim Nabors seem butch.

I laughed out loud when he said it, if a contestant steps up to audition for AI at this point as it's the 4th season, they know what's a comin'...
