I saw the amazing play American Son, and I was wondering why it did not receive any Tony Award nominations? Kerry Washington, Jeremy Jordan, and Steven Pasquale did a fantastic job! I was just curious, so If anyone has any comments that would be great!! :)

I, personally, did not see the play. It seems like a lot of people share the sentiment that it was pretty bad in general (like the person above), but I think even if it was just perceived to be an okay play, the play categories this year are insanely stacked. For Best Play, even To Kill a Mockingbird got shut out. Best Leading Actor in a Play was the most competitive category of the year; Nathan Lane didn't get a nomination. Best Leading Actress was competitive as well-- they nominated 6 people!
Stale, expedient storytelling and go-for-the-jugular sentimentality. Steven should not be on Broadway unless it's in a musical, and he was out half the run for injuries anyways. And if I wanted to hear a woman screaming for 90 minutes I would just take the subway.
