emmadny: I'm confused. What's wrong with a company other than Disney taking something to Broadway? I'd much rather see Anastasia go to Broadway than Sleeping Beauty, or something. Anastasia was written by an amazing songwriting team. I just fail to see how Anastasia was a "Disney Copy". To tell the truth, I prefer "Anastasia" to most Disney films I've seen.

SONDHEIM, I LOVE Anastasia, it's a wonderful animated films and David Newman Ost is incredible.
But I don´t like alls companies like Dreamworks or Fox copy all Disney topics and they start to do the shame that Disney....

But how are they doing shame to Disney? It's a business, and when one company produces a product, other companies will do the same.

Is it wrong for companies to do transfers of popular films like Disney? No. Disney wasn't the first to take a film and transfer it to the stage. So if anything, Disney is a copy of the people who originally did that. A Little Night Music is based off of a film, but was adapted into a musical for the stage. However there is nothing wrong with that. It's certainly not copying Disney, as it was made before Disney started adapting their own movies to the stage.

Ok. As I've said before, I'm against most screen to stage transfers, but I've wanted this one to happen for a long time. I really think it could work, with a few expansions/ revisions.

But what is this about the legend having recently been PROVEN false? I know the whole story was a long shot, but I've done a fair bit of research on the topic and don't remember seeing/ hearing anything that actually PROVED Anya didn't get away when the family was ambushed... I'm not saying that whoever posted that earlier is wrong, I'm just a little obsessed with this subject and would like to see for myself... any links to news articles, websites, etc?

Well we can all agree on that, but anything nowadays is based off of something else. If Broadway only had all original musicals, Disney would not be associated with it at all.

Aida is not remotely original.

Emmadny,

Your acting as if Disney was the token company to make cartoon movie musicals.

As it has been said before, it is a business and if there is anothe company that made an animated movie that wants to bring it to stage then let them by all means. But, to say that Disney can do it and others can't shows a bit of hypocrisy on your part.

I don't know. The music is pretty, but I think the historical inaccuracies are too much in this case. The real Anastasia died extremely horribly, and the woman who pretended to be her basically got away with identity theft for a number of decades. Considering they've just found Anastasia's bones recently, I think it'd be a little weird putting together this film as a musical right now. I'd love to see something more realistic about the Romanov family, though.

Because this movie is not well known will help it be successful in the broadway community. And with Sutton FOster in the title role it is sure to be a wonderfully produced show.

It would work very well on stage.

I'd rather get Anastasia on Broadway than Shrek or yet another Disney movie. Anastasia could work really well on stage.

I have always thought that Anastasia is perfect for Broadway. And what a show to reunite Sutton Foster and Gavin Creel!

I can't believe I'm saying this, but I disagree. Gavin Creel, maybe, but this is one show I would not actually want to see Sutton Foster in.

anyone else agree???

oh and yes i totally think they should make anastasia into a stage production
Shrek should never be on stage in my opinion..

I believe that Anastasia should be on broadway. They can edit a few things, adapt it to the stage, fix some historical inacuracies, and maybe add a few more songs. I always though it should be on broadway and it was my favorite movie when I was little.

But I also agree that there should be a musical about the Romanovs. The can center it around Anastasia if they wish (That would draw more people) and end with their deaths (In a very dramatic broadway way!). Or act 2 can center around Anna Anderson but have it known that she is a fake. Their has to be a big name composer to write it to draw in fans. Maybe Sondheim can write it, he is good at dramatic shows like this. And of corse their has to be a big name star to draw in more people.

I think that it'd be cool if Lenin were the bad guy instead of Rasputin.

Of course, that wouldn't be very PC, would it?

while i understand where everyone is coming from with the "disney copy" idea, i feel that while they hold similarities, anastasia holds something that makes it totally different.

it isnt full of all magic and spells creating a happily ever after
sure she is a princess or a dutchess or whatever, but she runs away from all that
the story dosesnt fill heads with thoughts that pixie dust will make you fly and everything will always turn out just as you had always wished for
yeah sure, the villan has magic but you know what i mean.

and most of all
in its own unique twisted way
it brings history to life
(though unlike 1776)
in a world full of excitement, suspense, artistic way
combined with a strong cast i think that even though the movie wasnt as well known as most disney movies
it will have a good following

many shows come out with nothing behind them and then they become big hits
just because the movie wasnt followed
doesnt mean the show wont be

i have faith in it
and i would love to see it on broadway

if you dont agree, listen to the opening of the movie,
those first few measures of music.
don't you feel the potential?

i think there is a lot of potential...and the movie has some big broadway stars lending their voices (not that it matters, but it is interesting)

i actually could see autumn from legally blonde: the search for elle woods starring.

I love the idea.

I'd go just to see how they do the 'Once Upon a December' scene, paintings all over the stage coming to life and dancing is a perfect 'wow' moment if done well.

With this film, I feel that the score could easily be added to without people feeling that they're just trying to thicken out whats there half-assed. Actually, compared to Disney movies...it has a relativly rich score, very stage friendly too.

The beasties in Rasputin's underworld would have to be addressed, as would Bartok.

I almost feel that they aren't needed? The show would feel a lot more grown up. Bartok could maybe be turned into a human. Rasputin could have a bunch of minions?

Hm.

It has such potential, especially that it would suit tourists...yet not compromise artistic integrity, unlike the Little Mermaid/Tarzan etc.

I like the movie and everything, but you're not ACTUALLY under the impression that the film version is anything remotely close to what actually occurred? That's like saying Jesus Christ Superstar is a historically accurate account of his execution.

It doesn't need to be historically correct, Jesus Christ Superstar is successful...and pretty much everyone knows that story.

Not everyone knows about Anastasia and the Romonov's story. Infact, quite a lot of people have no clue.

All it would need to do is have a disclaimer in the program or something, if they feel that people will seriously protest to the lack of accuracy.

The main aspects of the story are based on truth, well at least what a lot of people believe to be.
