This is such exciting news! I think she is a perfect choice. I read that Jennifer Hudson and Alicia Keys were both really interested, but I can't imagine Jennifer Hudson doing the voice of a 19-year-old princess. Now I LOVE Jennifer, but her voice, I think, is just a little bit too strong and gruff for soemthing like this, whereas Anika has a more clean, clear tone.
Anyway, now I'm REALLY excited for this movie! 2009 is way to long too a wait though :/
While I'd love to see her back on Broadway, I couldn't be happier for her. I think she's a magnificent actress and deserves a wide recognition. Go Anika!
This is amazing news! I am so happy they are drawing black leads! I always thought it was strange they did not have a black prince or princess. I hope the prince is black too. Next they need to do a latin story. Plus it is 2D!!! that is amazing!

I just hope that if they do a Latin-centered film it isn't as racist as the Dreamworks fiasco called El Dorado.
Not quite feeling the early prototype drawings. Can't wait to see the new deveopments.
Yeah, I don't know how I feel about her either. I just hope they don't make it so she is a poor black girl that has to have a white prince save her. That would just kind of kill my fairy tale dream.
Eh, I don't really like those either.

Is she actually singing the songs? Most of the animated voice leads don't.
That's usually because they hire people who can't really sing, i.e. Meg Ryan doing Anastasia's voice and Liz Callaway performing the songs.
If they hired Rose, I'm sure they're gonna take advantage of all her talents.
P.S: It's so refreshing to know Disney is going back to 2D animation.

"I hope she gets to do Porgy & Bess in NYC when it comes over."
Does she have the range?
EDIT:
Oh, you're talking about the version that played in London. I get it now. Never mind.
But, still, does she have the range? Did they take the score down a few octaves.
I'm pretty sure she has all the notes. If their in her vocal vernacular or not I couldn't tell you.
<< The best song Newman wrote for Disney was "When Someone Loved Me" from Toy Story 2. That should have easily won over Phil Collins' dreck from Tarzan.

Agree !!! And sung beautifully as well by Sarah M. (voice of an angel !!)

I actually really like El Dorado ... IMO, it is under-rated.
It is so awesome that there "are" still people in the company who care about traditional animation and who managed to convince the higher-ups that it'd be a good thing.
And Randy Newman didn't compose those songs for Disney films; he wrote them for Pixar movies :). Disney might have bought Pixar as a desperate attempt to save Feature Animation, but Pixar ain't Disney and never will be.
I'm glad Pixar is actually allowing Disney to go with no-names again. I'm sick of all this celebrity voice-over crap.
