How on earth can you guys hate the book? It's a brilliant analogy.
Anyway, be that as it may, I can't see it as a musical.
Oh, and there are actually three Phantom musicals. ALW, Yeston/Kopit, and Hill.

Jimmy, what are you doing here in the middle of the night? It's almost 9 PM!

americanboy99: you're getting a little worked up. Cut the coffee, have a rest, then get started on writing your own version.

This was one of my favorite books that I read in high school. I always envisioned it as a Pixar film that reached out to kids on the innocent funny animal level, but also to adults where they understand the deeper meanings, kind of like Shrek. I am excited to see what is done with this.

When I read it three years ago, I kept imagining it as a stage production. I kept wondering what it would be like as a musical. I want to see what happens, but I don't know if Elton John is the best choice. But, we'll see.

Yes, it does exist. I also know someone who's hight school did it. As I recall there is a song called "Four Legs Good, Two Legs Bad".
About time for a revival don't you think?

Rob Marshall must direct this for it to have any chance.

Great book, terrible idea.
Why? Because the characters aren't characters, but symbols for ideas. The story isn't about feelings, it's political allegory.
Not all good books are fodder to be turned into theatre or movies.
What will you suggest next? A musical based on Schopenhauer's Über die Grundlage der Moral? Well, it might be a Fringe hit - meaning 25 people adore it and post every day that it should move to Broadway.

Feel dumb because - ? Elton announced he may do a version? Does that automatically turn it into a good idea?

No. Because everyone wrote the OP off with his idea. And now it might get done.

So people should feel dumb because they didn't like the OP's idea?
