Annie came at a time when almost everyone, except the types who post here, had written off Broadway as dead. It was an enormous hit, made millions for its investors and creators and launched the interest in musical theater, and probably the careers of hundreds if not thousands of little girls, including Sarah Jessica Parker. I think the why is obvious. It sounds to me as if the where is the problem...
Annie's "curse" is how popular it is with amateur theater groups. (With all of those kids, you will make back your production costs with just the parents and grandparents coming to see it the first weekend, alone!)
Hundreds of poor productions of a show will undo the memory of a good production.
It is a good show. I'm, by nature, a cynical person and I enjoyed it the first time I saw it.
Does Martin Charnin have a life outside of directing both Equity and non) revival tours of this show?
Well said, SondheimBoy. The current tour really brought my love for the show back. I've seen it done badly tons of time, but seeing a top notch production with top notch kids shows how great the show truly is.
Charnin is an asshat. Ego Ego Ego! I'm happy with him sticking with Annie, just so we don't have to suffer through his other mediocre ideas.

"I would enjoy it greatly if they sold beer during Annie at MSG ".
It's really the only way to get through it. If I live to be 100, I don't ever need to hear "Tomorrow" again!
I hear if you sit in the back by the doors, you can't hear the show.
IMO, the only reason that A Christmas Carol worked so well there is because of the design. The houses that reached into the audience with actors in the audience and on the sides and all of the different landings. The set was designed for the theatre and it looked amazing. It seems like this show will get lost there.
I think it will do well because it's Christmas in NY and there are tourists EVERYWHERE and Annie is great for ppl and there young kids. All families enjoy it and it will do well during the Holidays.
