I think March Madness is great. 64 entries, single-elimination, knock ‘em out. But why should it be limited to basketball? This is BroadwayWorld, after all.
So, for no good reason except that it’s March, I’m going to run... the first annual March Madness opinion tournament! The topic this time: Favorite Broadway Musical of the Nineties. (And yes, I know there was a Best Show of the Nineties thread, but it was over three years ago, and it included plays and off-Broadway stuff, etc. etc.)
Here’s how it works: I’ve picked 64 musicals which had their Broadway premieres during the nineties (January 1990 through December 1999). I ranked (seeded) them by length of run, and divided them somewhat arbitrarily into four “regions.” Thus is created a 64-team bracket, just like in the basketball world.
How is each “game” played? I’ll create a thread listing the two musicals involved, and ask you which one you like better. For example: which musical do you like better, The Scarlet Pimpernel or The Capeman? (That’s going to be an actual first-round matchup, by the way.) You then cast your vote, either by commenting to the thread or by PMing me. In the initial post, I’ll list a voting deadline, which will generally be at least two days after I post it. Votes received after the deadline may or may not be counted, depending on what sort of mood I’m in. The musical with the most votes wins. I’ll announce each game’s winner at the end of its thread.
I’ll try not to have more than four games running simultaneously, to avoid totally monopolizing the board, and to minimize confusion (especially mine).
If someone votes more than once, I won’t count any of those votes... if I notice it.
I ask that you vote honestly, or at least plausibly. If you don’t know either of the musicals involved in a particular game, you probably shouldn’t vote in that game. If you know one of the musicals but not the other, I’ll leave it to your judgment. I’ll also leave it to your judgment on whether you choose to vote based on incomplete information about a particular show (cast albums, heard a song or two, read a review once...).
As to whether you choose to vote your honest opinion or a silly one, that’s entirely up to you. If the votes tell me that you generally liked The Best Little Whorehouse Goes Public more than Rent, hey, that’s how the votes came down. I believe that this whole project will be more interesting and entertaining if everyone votes their honest opinion... but I’m willing to be wrong about that.
A separate post will show the shows involved (and not involved), just to make sure I didn’t leave any out. According to ibdb.com, there were 72 musicals that premiered in the nineties, so I only had to keep eight out of the big dance.
The tourney will begin on March 1st. Fire up your memories!
