Posted: 2/2/06 at 12:53pmI understand what you are pointing out, but there is a big difference between Urinetown and the other show. Urinetown is a cynical satire, but the other one handles the issue at hand in a serious manner. Recently, more and more high schools have been doing it.

Posted: 2/2/06 at 12:54pmThat is crazy! Urinetown is not that bad. Plus, Cabaret isn't a squeaky clean show either...

Moake said after last year’s controversy over the content of the musical, she didn’t want people to be alarmed with this play’s title.
So a TITLE is enough to scuttle the production and apparently Cabaret is safe enough to fill in? Seriously?

Posted: 2/2/06 at 1:25pmCabaret?? Has the HS read that one? Prostitution, abortion, pre-marital sex, homosexuality, anti-Semitism?
#8re: Another HS denied Urinetown; guess what the replacement is
Posted: 2/2/06 at 1:32pmThey should make it like the 1998 revival version, just to stick it to the principal.

Posted: 2/2/06 at 1:33pmI find that hilarious! Why would they say no to Urinetown but yes to Cabaret? Are they going to do the revival version? LOL That's stupid..

Posted: 2/2/06 at 1:34pmExactly what in Urinetown is controversial??? Urine is a medical term, and it's not a dirty word. I don't get it. Once more, the conservative hypocrisy is obvious to everyone except the conservative.

Posted: 2/2/06 at 1:34pmThey probably only know of Joel Grey as a cuddly old man and figure anything he was in couldn't be all bad.

Posted: 2/2/06 at 1:41pmAlthough I don't wuite see how the two could make areasonable switch, but I don't see the horror of doing Cabaret (nor do I see the horror-controversy of Urinetown). I guess it's jsut because we did Cabaret my freshamn year of HS.

Posted: 2/2/06 at 1:48pmUrinetown is squeaky clean compared to Cabaret, but it has age on its side, and you have to admit that the first time you heard about Urinetown you were probably a little freaked out too. It's just a shame that the administration didn't take the time to do their homework.
#15re: Another HS denied Urinetown; guess what the replacement is
Posted: 2/2/06 at 2:00pmWell, if it's because the administration didn't do any research on it then the teacher should have had info to back up her decision like information on what the show is about, etc... I don't find anything offensive about the show at all... I do find it weird they'd do Cabaret. I still can't get over that but oh, well...

Posted: 2/2/06 at 2:02pmDon't forget all the drugs in Cabaret!!!!!! Yay Heroine!!!!

Posted: 2/2/06 at 2:03pmAlso, being from Indiana I can understand how close minded the administration is... Our school system took out band and wanted to take out drama and choir. They were successful with taking out the band and the drama class but they've kept choir for now.. With that being said we're looking for another school system for our kids to go to..

Posted: 2/2/06 at 2:27pmI went to a Catholic school and we were allowed to do GREASE and LITTLE SHOP OF HORRORS. Some people have strange ideas these days.

Posted: 2/2/06 at 3:07pmI thought my school was f*cked up. These a**holes are the most ignorant bunch I've ever heard of. I'm not having a good day so I'll just vent my anger on them.

I think I've mentioned this awhile back, but in 1979 my high school was prevented from doing the following plays:
Dark of the Moon (rape)
The House of Blue Leaves (pope assasination plan)
Forty Carats (incest)
The Real Inspector Hound (length)
God's Favorite (it had God in the title)
They approved Agatha Christie's Ten Little Indians, concerning a serial killer and cold blooded murder. Priorities, huh?

Posted: 2/2/06 at 3:14pmIf the original 1966 version of Cabaret is the one still being licensed, it's a hell of a lot tamer than the latest Broadway revival.

this same thing happened to me ..almost!
there are two high schools in our district. we asked to do Urinetown and were denied but the other school was able to do Cabaret. Its absurd. Our replacement show is Little Shop which is all fine since i like the show, but even that show is more controversial than urinetown.
urinetown: they say piss once. and urine is in the title
cabaret: nazis, risque night club, abortion, prostitution, homosexuality etc.
little shop: well violence, reference to bondage (handcuffs) can be taken violently or sexually..or both. etc
yeah id say urientown would be the most appropriate.... "dont judge a book by its cover" .. i.e. dont judge a show by its title.
i cant believe this happened to someone else...

So a TITLE is enough to scuttle the production
In the words of Little Sally, "a bad title, that can kill a show..."
