Another Kerry Ellis Thread...

Over at ATC, I found this thread and since I'm seeing Wicked in about a week, it made me worry and wonder.

Thoughts? Comments?

Everyone I know that has seen the ellis has said she has been amazing and her voice, although not doing her usual riffs is up to its usual standard. I think Kerry is probably still quite sick and there has been a lot saying her air con is messing with her voice but to say she is dull, i cant ever imagine kerry being dull, she is far too talented and will give her best even if unwell

My problem with Ellis was that I was looking forward to one of the amazing performances she was doing in London. However, I didn't get that. I got far from it. I understand that she was sick and didn't have a lot of resting time between finishing her run in London and comming to America. However, she was below sub par.

I understand that she was sick and that she was performing while sick. But, I think it is a bit much to have her first full week of performances since she started be this past week. She sang the score note for note as written and didn't do anything like riffs or anything like that. I also found her fake American accent rather annoying and didn't understand why she didn't use her regular British accent. I mean Menzel an American didn't use an English accent while performing the show in London. It is oz it is a fake place. Accents shouldn't matter. So why is she trying so hard to do an American accent espically when she goes in and out of it all the time.

I think that if she is sick then she shouldn't be going on. Espcially if it is impacting her performances which it clearly is.

For some Americans, it may be easier to listen to an American accent. In London, it may not matter so much what the accent is. Anyways, I don't see why Idina should have put on a fake British accent for Elphaba when she originated the role with an American accent. But I guess my point isn't valid since Kerry Ellis originated the role in a British accent, or am I wrong?

No offense to the British people here - I think British accents are cool!

Keep in mind that in terms of accents in the OLC there were people from Austirallia sp? as well as England. And one person from America if you count Idina. They all used thier native accents and didn't all use an English one.

I can see where your comming from in regards to the whole American accent might be easier to hear thing. But, Kerry did do the role originally with a British accent so there really is no reason why she can't continue that on Broadway. Just as it might be hard for an American to hear an English accent I guess the same could be said for someone in England. It could be hard for them to listen to an American accent. I don't know for sure I am just saying is all.

I highly doubt it was Kerry's idea to do an American accent.

She'll just be doing what she's told.

Again, Kerry doesn't do riffs, she sticks to the score. People may find that unimaginative, dull, whatever...but thats because we're used to Eden and Shoshana tearing it up with their vocal gymnastics...which just isn't how Kerry, or the other London cast, do it.

It COULD be that she is still being discouraged from doing it. When she performs outside of Wicked, she riffs...listening to her performances in We Will Rock You for example...she kicks ass.

So it's clearly not an issue of whether she's capable or not, I feel all non-attendance issues people have with her performance seem to come down to how she's being TOLD to do it.

Kerry is in NY where you hear all different accents everyday. So why should it really matter if she uses an American accent or her own British accent? At SD she deff. uses her own accent which I love by the way.
