The newly re-designed Backstage with a whole new format and shifting of content has announced that its weekly "Bistro Bits" column will now go monthly instead...and that there will be regular (and even expanded) cabaret coverage online at its website instead.
While it is true that web blogs are all the rage, somehow the cutting back of the only regular cabaret page around from the leading print-media trade paper for performers is really something of a setback.
There is so much cross-over between theater and cabaret...and since theater is the primary focus of Backstage's coverage, it doesn't make much sense to cut out cabaret.
Maybe it is all just a part of the new age we are in --- but in cabaret "everything old is new again"...and there is absolutely no reason why Backstage can't continue a weekly cabaret column - other than the apparently sad fact that it no longer considers the cabaret scene important.
Years ago, Variety also deleted its cabaret and nightclub section and severely cut back its legit theater section as well -when it discovered that the bulk of advertising revenues came from film and TV...now both Daily and Weekly Variety are just a fraction of the size they used to be...and their coverage no longer takes in the whole scope of show business.
