Sorry, Borstal, the poster for TMD wasn't there when I posted before.
I saw TMD when it was released. It has all of Minghella's strengths (skill with actors, interesting visual sense) and all of his weaknesses (nothing takes ten minutes if it can possibly be dragged out for a half hour, resulting in movies that are indefensibly prolonged to no real purpose, and a seeming need to hammer the serious points over and over and over). There were just a few too many scenes, I remember, of Juliet Stephenson's tears.
TMD is probably Minghella's best film, but that isn't exactly saying much.
