Since WB is the producer of both this and A STAR IS BORN this actually makes a lot of sense.

Yes, quite right.  But people don't understand what that means or who puts out these kinds of press releases.  "In talks" does not equate to being cast.  There'll be an official announcement if and when this film is close to going into production, which, at this point in time, it is not.

Since we are long past the days of "contract players" it actually has no correlation whatsoever.  Warner Bros is one of a (very) few large conglomerates that produce films in Hollywood, and the fact that an actor would appear in 2 films for the same conglomerate is almost unavoidable. I wouldn't read too much into it.
