Antonio VS Harvey

Sounds like a monster movie from the 50's ( heck maybe it IS) but I'm curious if moviestar who can perform will beat beloved B'way dinosaur. I KNOW how the theatre guild will vote how to u think the producers league will go?

HARVEY!

I'm praying for Antonio

Just because he plays the character so well and can actually sing, contrary to popular belief. He's worked hard and you can tell he's having the time of his life. Winning the Tony would only be icing on the cake for his hard work. I'm praying for Antonio

I'd love to seem them tie, myself

I adore Harvey, and think he is irreplacable. Once he's onstage, you never think of him as "Harvey, a guy in a dress." Plain and simple, he's Edna. Even out of drag, I still think of him as Marissas's mom.

But I saw 9 again last week..and I gotta say, I found Antonio much more comfortable on stage than before. No no longer seemed to be "working very hard" the way he was a few weeks ago -it was a more relaxed and human performance. He does work his ass off up there - And he's NEVER offstage. He's a good and exciting addition to the Broadway fraternity.

If it has to be ONE winner, I'd say that Harvey deserves it a touch more. But I'd be tickled if they tied. Feel the same way about Bernadette and Marissa (though I'm hoping Marissa comes out on top)

The winnah!

I liked Harvey's work ,he is a good "Mamma Edna" & yes even with the Nudge nudge comments u hardly remember it is a drag act.But every time I think of Antonio & Chita's tango..... WOW I gotta go 10 for "9"

Harvey

I'm a huge fan of Hairspray and love Harvey's performance. Unfortunatly, I have not seen Nine and don't think I'll be able to before it closes, so I can't give my opinion of Antonio. But, I'm rooting for Harvey.

Gotta Be Harvey!

I'm rooting for Harvey even though I thought Antonio did a fantastic job, too. Another tie would be fine with me just as long as Harvey is one of them.

A creative solution!

If they just would have nominated Harvey for Best Actress we wouldn't be having the dilemma.

My perfect day would begin at on the beach in Hana, Maui and end at a Broadway Musical.

I doubt there's a chance for another tie.

I think that they will give it to Harvey since Antonio has many more chances to win Tonys if he keeps doing Broadway.

I agree

The Tony committee seems to often use logic like that also.

Harvey

I've thought it over and am jumping on the Harvey bandwagon.

Harvey!

Good decision, Alvin and Rex! Harvey all the way!

yin/yang

I guess the thing is i know how most of the board & the theatre guild will vote but how about the producers et all from out of the new york area? They usually look @ things from a touring/money perspective. Hairspray is already casting for a tour while of course none of the NINE cast will tour nor is it as "approachable" a musical. Does that mean Harvey is a free throw?

No chance MasterLcZ

Do you really think that there's any chance of them tying?

Harvey!

It all depends on how their voting...if its A HAIRSPRAY sweep by the time Actor roles around..then anything's possible..

I think Harvey's performance is a seminal one in Musical Theatre History and the Role of Edna Turnblad will cause stirs 10 years from now in Community Theatres and High School auditoriums.....

Imagine, little 17 year old Johnnie from Spittston, Ohio playing Edna...

..then you see how important Harvey, and indeed, the role, are to Broadway lore.

I will cry...

...if it's a Hairspray sweep. When The Producers swept, it was the worst Tony year ever, and when Millie started winning all the awards at last year's show, there was a groan in the audience (I was there) until Urinetown won its first award. If there's no variety, the show's just not the same.

re: I will cry...

I don't think that Hairspray has a locked in sweep like the Producers did. Maybe 6-7?

re: winners?

TY Theatrebuff! Great article! That's what my point is, how will the out of towners see this? New Yorkers will almost certainly vote Harvey but how about producers in Seattle or Pittsburgh or Toronto, ( for the record MY thought is Toronto will vote Harvey) Alot of folks are influenced my mooim pitcher star esp one who can actually sing/dance/act! Antonio vs. Harvey

For me personally it doesn't really matter who's going to win. Both are great!!! But my feeling says Antonio.

re: Antonio vs. Harvey

Is this Antonio Bandares that you speak of? OK...he was alright in Nine...but everytime I hear his name...I...want to...kill myself!!!

re: re: Antonio vs. Harvey

I dunno. Since I've seen Nine, I've had a lot more respect for Antonio. When I heard he was going to be Guido, I wasn't the happiest person in the world because (a) I'd heard him sing in the ALW birthday celebration and he wasn't that great, to say it nicely (b) Based on his movies that I've seen, I didn't see what was so special about him. Then I saw Nine and...I can't really describe why I suddenly felt he could sing and act well. I guess it was the way he played out Guido's midlife crisis and his devotion to women, and his voice has developed a lot more since...1999? 2000? I can't remember the year the ALW celebration was. He is truly having the time of his life and is genuinely loving it.

And KB, in regards to your reply:
I think that they will give it to Harvey since Antonio has many more chances to win Tonys if he keeps doing Broadway.

It's not like Harvey is going to drop out of the limelight after Hairspray is over, either.
