The song, not the show. Joseph sings this at the beginning of the show and then at the end as a reprise. The way I see it is that Joseph has just had a dream, foreshadowing everything that is about to happen in the show. And then at the end, it's him recalling the dream he originally had and where is now.
Any other thoughts or perspectives?

I think it's just an excuse to make the show longer, like how every other line gets repeated twice.
well that and i think its a message to viewers, especially kids to follow their own dreams.
In the revival, he will be wearing a straight jacket, both in the beginnning and the end...which will make it obvious that this is all in Toby's mind.

Yeah. *agreeing*. It's a kid's show. It's a catchy song kids can sing along to. And, the song is an excuse for the ensemble to sing because in the show, they aren't really involved ON STAGE.

what production did you see??? I was in the ensemble of Joseph in a local production and the only break we had was "Close Every Door" and two actors playing the guards didn't even get a break then...
