I think with reworking the book, and tightening up the direction and choreography this show could have been a huge hit like Mamma Mia. The show opened to terrible reviews and still made it as long as it did because of the beach boys name.

That being said all that was needed was an out of town tryout for the show, which hopefully would have told the producers to tigheten up the book, and the direction.

Which to my opinion makes this show wide open for regional theatre productions, and non equity cast to make money off of.

There are plenty of shows that have not survived Broadway (or even been there) but do well in the community theater/regional circuit. "Working", "Do Black Patent Leather Shoes Really Reflect Up", "Honk" and "Return to the Forbidden Planet" come to mind.
