I went by TKTS this evening and was about to buy a ticket to see it, but talked myself out of it. I don't know much about it, and I searched this site for feedback about it, but there really isn't much. Has anyone seen it? Is it worth seeing? Updated On: 12/1/04 at 07:32 PM
Although I have heard mixed things about this production, I would consider Pacific Overtures a "must see":
1. The Sondheim Score
2. The rarity that this show is revived, anywhere.
If the production is even halfway good, I will be satisfied to see this often forgotten Sondheim show. A must see for anyone interested in serious musical theatre craft.
It's got Sondheim and Franc from Father of the Bride! What's not to like?
In response to the answer to your question.
Nope. I saw the original & was not bowled over by it

There's a pretty long thread with multiple reviews of the previews of the show. Look back a few pages and it should be there.
I saw it this past Saturday, and will be glad to review it once it officially opens. :)
I loathe the table and chair seating there. Everyone moves their seats for the best possible view. I had an 80 yr old woman almost sitting on my lap. Not a good way to enjoy the pleasures that are B.D. Wong.
Actually, it's not Franc from Father of the Bride (that was Martin Short)...BD Wong played his assistant named, I think, Howard Weinstein or something.
I don't know...I like Sondheim but I'm not chomping at the bit to see this one. If we're looking at Japan opening to the West, I'd rather see The Mikado. I'm awful.
I too despise the seating at studio 54, but I would say definitely definitely go see it - I think it's a brilliant show.

It is one of the most exciting, original, pieces in the entire musical comedy reperatory. See it, I saw the OBC, the Japanese production at Lincolin Center, and I plan on seeing this a couple of times at least. Get your hands on a copy of the OBC (if that is not available the English National Opera recording on TER) it would be good to familierize (sp?) yourself with the show before you see it as it is very dense and complex.
Just my opinion, I may be wrong.
I have to say that I've owned the cd of PO for years, but hardly ever listened to it...until I saw this revival.
Now I can't stop listening to this score. It's achingly beautiful. And the show is oddly moving, especially since it's not particularly emotionally engaging.
I was surprised at how the show really has nothing to do with Japan and everything to do with America.
Though I have some reservations about the piece, I highly encourage people to go. It's demanding, but well worth the effort.
I saw the Chicago production that transferred to the Donmar in London and loved it. Regardless the production, it's a beautiful score and an interesting story told in a unique way. I'd go see it, but it certainly won't get the attention Assassins did.

Sorry folks...I don't understand the good reviews of this show. I found it tedious at best. It was a strange experience. The acting is good, the costumes are great, the music is interesting. For some reason it never came together for me. It was very dissapointing, as I am a big Sondheim fan. Maybe I'm missing something. I'm glad I got discounted tix, because it certainly was not worth top dollar. Just one mans' opinion.
